I'm not entirely sure what people expect from one of the cheapest and oldest hotels in the city!!!!! I booked this hotel, having read reviews here, and having visited the hotel website, knowing full well in advance that i would be staying in a very old building, that would be bound to be suffering a little from old age and be a bit rough around the edges.
The staff were very friendly on arrival, and personally showed us to our room (rm10). The cleanliness of the room was not 100%, but it was clean enough, to a good enough standard (give the chambermaid a break - she looks about 100 years old!). The room was very spacious, and had a large bathroom. There was however a problem - on the first morning i awoke to find it 'raining' on me. The shower in the room above was leaking onto our bed. This was reported to the staff, who promptly moved us, and apologised.
No tea/coffee facilities in the room - however, there is a shop on the corner of the square which kept my caffine requirements met with a large bottle of cola!
The food down in the restaurant is expensive, over expensive for the rest of the markt, but very good none-the-less.
I noted one reviewer complaining about the cost of a coffee, yes it's a pain that you have to buy it and not able to make one in your room. However, another cafe on the square charges 8euro for a coffee, so i wouldn't complain too much about Centrals prices!
If you want to spend 200 euro a night on a luxury hotel, and a 5 minute walk away from the Markt then book the crownplaza or bestwestern. If you want to be directly on the markt, in one of the oldest (and maybe quirkiest) buildings in the city, AND spend 150 euro for 2 nights - then Cafe Central is the place for you!!!
It is totally stunning to walk out of the Central each morning and be greeted by the wonderful Markt!!
Many other things to recommend in Brugge - a horsedrawn carriage ride is well worth the money.
Cambrinus - Go there - just go there!! 150 meters to the right of Central. 400 beers available, and very good food too!!
Food example: Cafe Central - Raviolli 20euro. Cambrinus - Ribeye/salad/chips/ 20euro.
I drove to Brugge and parked my car in the car park next to the central train station. The parking for 2 1/2 days came to 5euro!!!!! A taxi from the car park to the hotel is approx 7euro.
