When we arrived we were a little shocked and pretty disappointed with our room. Yes, we had booked a small double, but room 3 is, in reality, no more than a single sized room with a threequarter double bed in it. There were no bedside tables, so nowhere to put a book, your glasses or a drink for the night, not that there could be a table or shelf on one side anyway, as it was flush against the wall due to the very limited space. The rest of the furniture comprised a very old, tatty bureau with a flat screen TV on top of it and an archaic looking single wardrobe whcih my partner was afraid to open in case she discovered it was actually room 4!
As for the bathroom, it is extremely narrow and seperated from the bed only by a plastic concertina type 'door' that would not close. The shower looks like it is actually a cupboard, and upon using it, it flooded within half a minute, no doubt as the drain needs unblocking, but nobody has done it. I'm sure the owner would point out that we did not report the shower, and this is true, but I would question whether hotels should rely on their guests to report such matters, when they should really be keeping on top of such things themselves, so that guests find facilities that are actually in good working order.
I must stress that the room,. and the rest of the public areas were spotlessly clean, we have no complaints at all about cleanliness here. We also found the bed very comfortable, but the room was stiflingly hot on our arrival and the temperature was never quite 'right' for the whole stay after that.
Once the shock of the reality of the room not meeting our expectations had passed, we did grow to quite like the room in a strange sort of way. Looking past the negatives of room 3, the rest of the hotel seemed very nice. The breakfast room was attractive, the breakfast was excellent, and the little lounge by reception was very comfortable. The location is very good if you want a bit of peace and quiet, but only a short walk from the Beginhof, Minnewater and the centre, and I can imagine that the garden is a lovely place to sit in the summer time. To our delight we made friends with the two hotel dogs, who loved to be petted and have their ears tickled! That alone almost made up for the accommodation!
In conclusion, I think that anyone who wants a family run hotel full of character would enjoy a stay here as long as they avoid room 3. On the other hand, if you want modernity, contemporary fixtures and fittings, or if you don't like dogs, you would undoubtedly be better off elsewhere.
