We had originally planned on camping, then the temperatures dropped (a LOT) and we were far from home, at about midnight. My bf went in to a local bar and chatted with some friendly old Belgian gentlemen, one of whom called a friend (who was in bed), saying he had a B&B. The friend turned out to be the owner of Fort Lapin, which wasn't completely renovated/officially open yet, but he came and drove out so that we could follow him back (it wasn't hard to find, but it was late and dark, so very nice gesture).
The guy at the bar kept winking and nudging my bf, saying, "you'll REALLY like this place - you'll be engaged in the morning. Come back tomorrow - I have another friend who's a priest!" Very cute, but we assumed he was overselling the place a bit because it was his friend's and he was a bit... jolly from the beer at that hour. Wow, was I wrong!
We drove up to what tuned out to be a sort of castle. The owner kindly showed us 3 rooms, one of which was the turret room with 2 story windows and french doors, saying almost apologetically that it was 10 EU more. We were already unpacking and exploring the upstairs loft.
It was awesome. Seriously, even though it's across from an industrial area, the lights on the canal are just as romantic (and probably more private). The place has a huge, luxurious tub, candles everywhere, crisp, clean sheets (though it still has that WEIRD two-twin-mattresses to make a king bed thing that they do in Europe), bottled water - pretty much everything short of champagne and roses (which I'm sure they'd add if you called first). It was a magic evening (especially when we'd been looking at frozen grass as the alternative).
The breakfast was nice (but vegetarians take note - it was the typische meat and cheese-heavy breakfast, so you may want to mention more fruit or yogurt, etc. the night before). Afterward, we went back to the room and didn't check out 'til 4 pm. We've been back since, and it was every bit as good. Fort Lapin: 499.5 STARS!!!
(- 0.5 for the weird taxidermy all over the hotel...)
