“Ultimate place to be to spend a magnificent weekend in Bruges”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

If ever you intend to visit Bruges, this is like the place to be!!!! Close to everything (like max 10 min walking distance). Extremely inviting hosts, great breakfast. Oh and like the interior decoration and the room are so indescribably nice... And summer enjoying yr morning waking up on your little private terrace on the canal... oh very very good, and the classic bathtub in the bathroom, almost too romantic... Very good beds as well. I would say if you aim to treat your loved one to a romantic weekend - there is no better option available!! (if you like animals you'll specifically enjoy the extremely warm welcome by Seppe and Martha, who form an integral part of this unforgettable experience!

The Canal Deluxe B & B is beautiful, and the hosts are very welcoming and bend over backwards to make your stay pleasant. The breakfast was superb -- perhaps the best I have ever had in a B&B - fruit, delicious breads, croissants, etc., eggs, cold meats. Perfect! The room was lovely -- fireplace, with fire laid and ready to go, very comfortable bed, free wifi, well-appointed bathroom. They offer bikes for rent at a very reasonable price, and Bruges is a lovely place to ride a bike, whether in town, or in the parks or along the canals. There is a lovely garden at street level, as well as below on the canal.
My only caveat is that in the apartment where we stayed, the bathroom was 2 stories below the bedroom and accessible only by a spiral staircase. Be forewarned, anyone who needs to get up in the middle of the night! But if you can manage that, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Bathroom not on same floor as bedroom.

We stayed here for 3 nights in July - for a joint celebration - anniversary, my birthday and a work celebration. Couldn't have chosen better - the hosts were both wonderful, the fire was lit with a breakfast brought in for us while we were still in bed on the first morning - lovely continental breakfast. Close to amenities - can walk everywhere. A dream break away and made more wonderful by this B&B. Didn't leave the room till 12 on first morning - leisurely breakfast in front of fire. Evening - champagne sitting next to the canal at the back of the room- couldn't beat it. Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed at Canal Deluxe for six nights in the Suite Euphrasie. He attended a conference during the day, and I toured Brugge. Canal Deluxe was a lovely retreat for us at the end of the day. When we looked online, we were hesitant about staying in a suite when the bathroom was on the bottom of floor and the bedroom on the third floor, but it really was a non-issue. The whole building is so lovely and peaceful. We enjoyed having access to the canal. The bright and cheery bathroom combines the historical feel of the stone steps, floors, and walls with very comfy, modern conveniences, although no shower. The sitting room has a usable fireplace, and the bedroom had plenty of space to spread out. The breakfasts left us spoilt for choice and introduced us to Belgium's artisanal cheeses. Tine buys her bread at a local baker and those were delicious. Their dog Seppe gave us a a grand welcome as well! We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at B&B Canal for 4 nights.

The business is owned by Tine Hessels, a very pleasant and helpful lady with whom we had a friendly relationship over our stay.

The accommodation is located in a separate building behind the owners' house, separated by an attractive courtyard with paving, plants, seating areas and high boundary walls. Very comfortable on a sunny day, to just sit or enjoy a glass of wine and cigar.
Access to the street is from the courtyard via the owners' corridor.

We were given keys for the street door and we had no problem with this.
The town centre is just around the corner, about 10 minutes away, walking slowly.

There are two almost identical suites.
Ours was the Eugenie suite with a sitting room downstairs, bedroom and bathroom upstairs.
There was no noise to interrupt a night's sleep - just the occasional noise of quacking ducks on the canal. Rather nice.

Bedroom/Bathroom - bathroom rather small, but adequate, with a walk-in shower compartment, large pedestal basin and wc. The large shower head and quality valve are excellent.
We did miss a latch on the door which would not shut properly because it is warped.
The bedroom has the largest double bed we've seen - it's as wide as it is long. Very comfortable and clean.

Sitting Room - has a small sofa and some chairs, kettle and coffee making machine. Adequate for our short stay.
Front window looks out to the courtyard, rear window overlooks the canal where we frequently saw swans, ducks and fish.

Breakfast was excellent consisting of a selection of meats and cheeses, wonderful bread, jams, honey, fruit, cereals etc. - varied slightly each morning, which was good. An adequate quantity to last you through most of the day.
You can have breakfast in your suite or in the dining room at the rear of the owners' house.
We chose the latter - gave us the opportunity to talk to Tine and other guests.

Minor irritations - no latch on bathroom door, unnecessarily complicated light dimmers, generally inadequate lighting, no fresh water tap.

Overall, a very comfortable and pleasant place to stay and is highly recommended.

Thank you for your review. It is always helpful to get feedback. We will be taking your remarks into consideration.....and the bathroom door will be replaced during wintertime WITH a hatch. :-) ....this was already on our to-do-list.
It was our pleasure meeting you.

Upon arrival, I wasn't sure we had the right place. And then Seppe (the dog) greeted us and I knew we had found it. We had a long, delayed train from Paris and were late. We were still greeted with a fabulous local beer and made comfortable right away! Tine helped with all kinds of good info on Bruges and introduced us to our home for three days. And what a fabulous home! Our upstairs bedroom consisted of the best bed in Europe and a view over the canal. The rain shower worked perfectly and my husband finally found a shower that he loved in Europe. Downstairs, our living room was perfectly equipped with a television and coffee maker. The working fireplace was lit each morning for a romantic breakfast wheeled in on a cart. Breakfast was all fresh goodies and more then we could ever try to finish. Orange juice was freshly squeezed right before it arrived in our room. The atmosphere is like stepping back in time and the hosts made us feel right at home. They even put up with talking to us and answering all of our questions. We rented their bikes one day and took a ride along the canal to Damme. They even helped us get train tickets into Germany when there was a glitch at the train station. All in all, this is worth every single penny that they ask for. In fact, I see this place doing even better and you should consider booking way in advance. Even the smell for the rooms was inviting! Location rocks! Nothing bad that I can say.

Room Tip: We stayed in Eugenie and it was wonderful! Very quiet and comfy! Rain shower was good and stairs n...

You really know how to write an impressive review Denise.....thanks a million. Nice to read how much you enjoyed your stay.
We indeed try to combine the old with the new because that is what Bruges is famous for: old historical city with all modern facilities which makes living here most enjoyable.

Charm charm charm! And that was just the building. The hostess is charming, as is her friendly little dog.

At the end of four weeks of European holiday and not looking forward to going back to work, Canal Deluxe B&B topped of our trip perfectly. Bruges is so compact that I think most places are in walking distance. Canal Deluxe definitely is - about 5 minutes to the Markt passing cute stores and amazing buildings on the way. And don't be fooled - almost all the attractions in Bruges are also in walking distance.

Tina, the hostess welcomed us and gave us a personalised map writing on it the things she thought we should definitely see and the things that weren't really worth it.

We were offered breakfast brought to our room on both days on a trolley - absolutely lovely. This was European continental style breakfast but with a luxury added to it - devine freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade omelette, croissants and other buns, delicious jams and marmalades, coffees, teas etc. YUM! On the first morning our open fire was also lit for us but on the second morning, since we were leaving that morning and they would need to clean the room, the fire could not be lit (understandable).

It was made clear that if there was anything we needed and wanted, we should go and knock on the door of the hosts' house. We felt like they really wanted us to be 100% comfortable, and they were so friendly.

The ONLY things I can say which are bad are that if there is someone staying in the other room (there are only two rooms), it can be a little noisy because of the proximity. Mostly doors closing, footsteps on the floor, that kind of thing. And also, there is no signage at the streetfront so you are not sure if you are knocking on the right door. But PLEASE don't let this change your mind about booking Canal Deluxe - as you can see from my 5 star rating, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives.

If we ever get back to Bruges from New Zealand, we will go straight back here. The spiral staircase, the rustic fireplace, the lovely welcome, the luxurious breakfast... ah, you just have to experience Canal Deluxe B&B.
