“A brrilliant short break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

We stayed at Hotel Montanus 21 - 25 September. It was fabulous. We stayed in the main building. Good sized room, very clean. The breakfast, although pricey, was excellent and well worth having before going off sightseeing. The hotel is in a great position. Near enough to walk from the train station and near to all the sights. The Makt Square is only about 10-15 minutes walk away. The hotel has an excellent residents lounge. We didn't eat in the hotel as it was pricey and there was plenty of choice of restaurants round about.
A brilliant short break.

Room Tip: We were happy with our room in the main building. We didn't see the rooms in the annexe but exp...

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. We had a Standard garden room. We paid €258 for bed and breakfast including surcharge for our 2 small dogs. We arrived, very weary, around 7pm following a long 9 hour drive from Yvoire. The hotel is in a superb location, within walking distance of the centre. Our room was on the upper floor of the 2 storey outside living area, nicely appointed room and bathroom, overlooking the garden. The reception staff were very helpful. We eat dinner out on both evenings. There is such a choice of lovely places in Bruges, you are spoilt for choice! Breakfast in the hotel was very good with a large choice of both freshly cooked and continental options. Dogs were allowed in all areas of the hotel, which to dog owners is a huge bonus.
On the down side our bedroom door and the other surrounding doors all squeaked, so entering or leaving was not necessarily a quiet experience. Our sink required attention and the bath hand rail, was coming away from the wall. Bit disappointing for a 4* hotel. It the dog friendly environment and helpful staff throughout saved my rating to diminish further.

We enjoyed both the hotel and the restaurant at Montanus. We felt that it represented very good value given its location, quality, staff and services. Because we had wet and cool weather, I can only surmise that Montanus would be a lovely oasis on hotter days, away from the busy-ness of central Bruges. Our biggest challenge was that Internet was available only in the central part of the hotel, which did NOT include our room. I'd advise anyone planning to stay at Montanus to confirm that they have WIFI access in their room.

Room Tip: Request a room with Wifi access.

This hotel is a 5 minute taxi ride from Bruges station and is within walking distance to most sites. Ladies consider your heels as there are lots of cobbled streets... Take some flat shoes!
Our room was larger than expected and clean. Breakfast was a choice of a continental or there was full English or omelette etc. There was also marshmallows with dipping chocolate!!!
We didn't eat in the hotel and were out most of the time but it was the ideal base to explore Bruges.

To start with, the room got hot and very uncomfortable to stay when it was warm outside. there is no aircon or fan, and if you open the window a little bit, mosquitos got in, so we didn't have proper sleep at all! Also, the bed was very hard to sleep on and the pillow and duvet were very uncomfortable.

Worst of all, at the checkout, I was shouted at by a middle-aged woman behind the counter who appeared to be the hotel owner. She insisted that I booked a garden room and wanted to charge me for that despite the fact that I didn't book and stay in that room!! Her attitude was appalling and finally she found out it was their systems problem and charged me for the room I stayed.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you'd like a pleasant experience in Bruge!

Me and my wife had the best experience at Montanus, the owner is a very nice lady and her nephew takes care of everything in the best possible way. the location is good but needs a 10 min walk to the center of the city. The hotel is very different from the rest of Europe's city hotels. I recommend everyone considering a nice stay at a beautiful city to try at Montanus.
