Owner description: The historic center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 thanks to its status as one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe and its enduring Gothic architecture. The Belgian city center is cited as a great example of a medieval historic settlement, even while it has evolved over the years.

It was easy to find your way around and an uncluttered city I will come back to. The architecture is interesting and varied

“Beautiful photogenic city”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

A city best seen on foot and by boat. We came for the day but resolve to return for longer to see more of the city and wander around early in the morning before it gets crowded.

“Loads to see and do”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

If you like markets, history and good beer and food then the Historic Centre of Brugge will make for an enjoyable experience. It is also a great choice for those of us who are chocaholics. Look out for some of the prices though, as they vary greatly from shop to shop. In fact, some of the best food and drink choices are to be found in back streets and side streets. Look to TripAdvisor for some of the best reviews, because many of them lead to great value places to eat.

“Lots To Do, Wander Aimlessly”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

Of course you have your tourist spots and museums but the character of this area is what makes it so grand. Keep a map with you or at least have an offline GPS map with you to make your way back to a spot you may want to return or find your hotel.

The market square is fun when it is full of vendors. There are many eateries, chocolatiers, museums, souvenir shops, beer stops, and shopping, and more in this area. You can spend a whole day wandering. I advise to research just a few top spots you want to visit then discover the rest naturally. The center may look big on a map but in 15 minutes you have walked across this entire section.

Know that as you get closer to the center the expense of any item is marked up higher but not necessarily better in quality.

With the height of the buildings you may have to come at differing times of the day to get proper sunlight on the building faces.

“A great place to visit”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

Lovely historic marketplace, surrounded by restaurants, museums and shops. Plenty of horse and carriage rides to choose from. The best time to see this is early in the day before the bus loads of tourists arrive. Would also recommend just walking...out of main tourist area, into the surrounding streets...the old buildings are beautiful.
