Owner description: The historic center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 thanks to its status as one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe and its enduring Gothic architecture. The Belgian city center is cited as a great example of a medieval historic settlement, even while it has evolved over the years.

I loved Bruges! The city center is so romantic and beautiful; we stopped and had a meal overlooking the square. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would love to return for a longer period. Don’t miss Bruges especially if you love history, quaint cobbled streets, wonderful people and just an all-around medieval feeling city.

History comes to life in Brugge! If you have any interest in medieval history, you must visit Brugge.

This was our fourth visit to this historic, fascinating and so photogenic city. We have been previously in June, September, December ( for the Christmas market ) and now April. Believe me it is always thronged with people - although it does get a little quieter in the evenings. Small groups of tourists of all nationalities, led by a guide with a clipboard and an umberella, are everywhere in the old city. You tend to get swept along with the crowds.
Having said all this, you have to go at least once because it is such a beautiful place. Have a coffee or a beer sat outside watching the crowds ( even if you end up paying through the nose for it in the popular areas ). Visit the main sites with the crowds, including the belfort tower, cathedral, and half moon brewery. Then find a good restaurant for lunch or an evening meal. There's plenty of choice, although we like Cambrinus.

No wonder the city has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status. It seems during the second world war there was an understanding between the Allies and Germans to leave Bruges alone hence there was no war damage and the city has been left, in some respects, as it would have been in mediaeval times. Of course the modern life takes its toll and now there are cars as well as hordes of buses coming to Bruges. It is a city worth making a detour to if not making it the first port of call in Europe.

Two beautiful squares situated by the river. Suqares flanked by restaurants and bars, top left corner and down the weltmeg are three or four bars close together. Expect to pay 20 euro a meal and 4 to 5 euro a pint...well worth it.
