“Cozy, away from the crowd, friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Down an alley, off a shopping street, sits this beautiful restaurant where we had a leisurely, authentic Flemish price fixed lunch. The other diners were all locals. One of us had the North Sea Fish Stew and the other the Sauteed Beef. Both were done to perfection. The service was definitely slower than your usual tourist place, but the surroundings were so pleasant and the food so good, we didn't mind missing some of the other destinations. Well worth the price of about $100 for 3 courses for 2.

“Stuffy and overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

This felt like a restaurant trying to seem authentic and rustic to tourists. Surrounded by English, Russian and Spanish, I realized that no local would ever be caught dead here.

Two fixed menu options, both for 32 euros, which by default do not include any vegetarian dishes. The 'a la carte menu' is limited, with no explanations of the dishes. Only familiar big-name, big-batch beers on the menu and just 5 or 6 of them. In a country famous for its endless variety of beer, this seemed like a travesty. They didn't offer a single beer from the one brewery still brewing in Brugge proper.

The tomato soup was scalding hot on arrival and was very salty. The beef stew, which is the reason the place was recommended to me, was surprisingly sweet. This, I gather, is one way to prepare it, but it was otherwise not very flavorful. The dessert was nice, but nothing special. This kind of food is uncomplicated and does not require expensive ingredients so it needs to be tastier to cost as much as it did.

The good: Quiet enough to talk without having to raise your voice (maybe noisier on a weekend night). Generous portions. I couldn't finish any of the courses. For this, I've given it "average" instead of "poor", but I wouldn't actually go back.

Very authentic place to eat, delicious menu and at last they have their own homemade ice creams. They have a decent owner indeed.

“Perfect blend of delicious, ambiance and beer.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We were recommended this restaurant by the guide of a bike tour we took and as we'd eaten on the Burg square where the food seems to be "we don't have to try because we have the location" we were looking for authentic and good tasting food. The location was off one of the main shopping streets, so quite close to the centre of town. The outside was cute and inviting in an old stone house with lots of flowers. We arrived early, so we were able to get a table without a reservation.
The mussels appetizer was very good (though there was a bit of grit) but overall tasty. For the main we had the Flemish beef stew and it was delicious. Served in a big cast iron covered pot, it was full flavoured and had a lovely thick broth without being gummy or overly thickened. The beef was tasty and fell apart and was served over a shallow bowl filled with fresh frites. The beer offerings were delightful and we had different but both very tasty beers, though being served in 75 cl (750 ml) bottles, they aren't for the faint of heart.
We were unable to resist the allure of a waffle for dessert and it was so light and crisp and airy that it was basically a vehicle for spooning of the chocolate and ice-cream into our mouths.
Not a cheap dinner out but delicious and well worth it.

“Good food, bad taste”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We felt very lucky and smart to discover this cosy restaurant down a side street. This was our first night in Bruges, so we decided to order traditional Flemish choices; mussels and beef stew.
The mussels were plentiful and fine though I would have preferred a more well-seasoned broth. The beef stew was delicious! Others may find it disappointing as it was just beef in a beer gravy and did not contain vegetables. Our waiter/maitre d' was pleasant enough, but we did have one significant complaint. My sister-in-law asked for tap water and was told that we should never drink the tap water in Bruges! He said it was completely recycled water; recycled from all kinds of waste water. "Use your imagination", he said. "You might be able to drink tap water it for a few days, but any longer and you would become sick." We, of course, did not hesitate to order a bottle of water immediately! Upon further investigation the next day, we found that we had been bamboozled! There is no problem with the water. I detest this type of tourist exploitation! I understand that it is customary to order bottled water, but that was no reason to lie to us. He might have said that they didn't serve tap water, without the added deception. To add further insult, he brought a bottle of water that had no seal. It was a very attractive, fancy-looking bottle that cost 7 Euros for less than a liter. We never saw that particular brand again over our next week in Belgium. I rather suspect they reuse the bottles, filling them with, oh, I don't know,............ TAP WATER?
So despite the nice surroundings and decent food, we left with a bad taste in our mouths. I started this review with a "good" rating, but having written this has angered me all over again, so I will change it to poor. There is no excuse for that type of abuse.

hojas, Manager at De Vlaamsche Pot, responded to this review, September 24, 2013
additional information; the price referred to concerns the personalised bottle and not the water itself is three euro; sometimes people think they pay for the bottle itself and want to take it with therefore we are obliged to ask a price for the bottle itself, greetings mario
