Nathan Ghysbrecht is an amazing guide who has a wealth of knowledge about WW1 and the Flanders area. We are so glad that we booked his mini-bus tour for our party of six (including two children aged 12 and 5) well in advance.
Nathan's black mini-bus, decorated with red poppies, is able to accommodate eight passengers. It is comfortable and air-conditioned. We shared our day-trip with two pleasant Americans from Salem in Oregon. We were picked up from our Bruges hotel promptly at 8.45am and driven firstly to the German WW1 cemetery in Langemark. Nathan's knowledge is quite amazing and he imparts it to his passengers in a most interesting way. He doesn't read from a script.
During the morning, we also visited Tyne Cot, the world's largest WW1 cemetery. I was looking for the memorials of six soldiers from my village who are remembered there whilst my husband wanted our daughter, son-in-law and the two children to see his grandfather's name on the walls. Nathan was able to locate all seven names in double-quick time for us, a task that would have taken us hours.
We also visited the hills of Flanders, Mount Kemmel, Messines Ridge, and several mine craters. The Passchendaele Museum was exceptionally interesting. It is set in beautiful gardens overlooking a lake. There we were able to spend time in a dugout tunnel and wander round the various rooms filled with exhibits. We visited Hill 62, Hill 60, the Menin Road, and other bunkers and craters, and artifacts that have been discovered by farmers in their fields.
We stopped off in Ypers for lunch at Nathan's cousin's taverna in the main square. All our food and drink was included in the price of the tour. Our party was then free to visit the 'In Flanders Fields Museum' in Ypers which was fascinating. If one had the time, it would be possible to spend a whole day here. The gift shop within the museum has high quality merchandise at very reasonable prices.
After leaving the museum to meet up again with Nathan near the Menin Gate, we passed a top quality ice-cream shop. Do treat yourself if you have time. The ice-creams are delicious.
The six of us (three generations of the same family) wouldn't have missed this experience for anything. The two Americans in our party were equally as impressed as we were. We were delivered back to our hotel in time for an evening meal at 6.00pm, tired but happy.
Well done, Nathan, and thank you for having us.
