“Glad we arrived early!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2014

We arrived at the Gruuthuse Hof at around 5.30pm to be told food service did not start until 6. However the Waiter/Manager was quite happy for us to take a table and have a drink while we waited. And very glad we were that we did!
We both opted for the "Tourist Menu" at 16.80 Euros. We both had soup to start, then I had half a roast chicken and my wife went for the salmon steak. For dessert it was profiteroles for her and I had the ice cream.
The food was excellent from start to finish, as was the service.
With 3 glasses of red wine and two of orange juice the whole bill came in at 50 euros, so value too!
One word of warning, the place filled up very quickly, and we did see several people turned away so get in early or book.

“Still excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014

Staying in Bruges right now and visited our favourite restaurant Gruuthuse Hof this evening. Same waiter Nicol of 5 Years ago (says he's been there 20 Years.)
Quiet at first as we we in before 6pm opening time but it was soon full.
Glass of local beer for me whereas my wife chose rose and then from the menu Dover Sole for my wife and a Rib Eye Steak for me with a Pepper sauce
These came with Fries and a Salad garnish and proved to be delicious.
For afters we both chose Creme Brulee that was also delightful.
A most enjoyable meal that we would love to repeat one day.
Thoroughly recommend.

“One of the best Apple Pie's!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2014

We stopped off for waffles and a hot chocolate. When I saw hot Apple Pie on the menu, I couldn't resist and it was one of the best I've tried. Lightly spiced and hot, washed down with a surprisingly lovely hot chocolate. The waffle was OK and the service wasn't the best, but it was worth it for the Apple Pie.

“Cosy restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2014

Worth booking! Popular small restaurant, you're unlikely to get a table if you don't book.
Nice atmosphere and excellent views of the tallest tower in Bruges!
Wonderful duck with apricot and raspberry.
Good service, try the typical Belgium digestif!

“Supercilious service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2014

I have rated this restaurant with two stars because, despite the excellent food, the service was disdainful and snooty both to me and other potential diners.

On two occasions, we tried to book (it is very small) and were told there was no room. On the third try, we got a table but were at no time made to feel 'welcome' in any way. The unsmiling male couple who ran the place glided about between tables as though the clientele were unwelcome guests who had dared to intrude into their own living space.

As an example, when we finally got our table (close to the door) and sat down, another couple came in and asked: " Do you have a table for dinner tonight?" The response was a curt "No!".

"Do you have a table for tomorrow night?" Another curt "No!"

Disconcerted by this brusqueness, the inquirer politely asked "Do you have a table for lunch tomorrow?" This was met with another curt "No!"

"And the following day ?" "No -- we are closed for the next two days."

The potential diners left the restaurant confused and humiliated by these arrogant and unnecessarily uninformative responses.

If you are reading this, Gruuthuse, try smiling at your customers and offering useful information to them, so they don't have to fish for it.

Overall, and underwhelming experience.
