We booked well in advance for a evening meal here and were not disappointed. The bistro is well off the tourist track (not that most restaurants in Bruges are above average in busy areas as well as beyond). The facility was very comfortable and homely, and the service was attentive. The meal we had was a delight, with everything fresh and simply but carefully prepared. The wine was also very good and not too pricey. We thoroughly recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in Bruges if you want quality over quantity and at a price which is reasonable and not too excessive.

If you are staying at the Rosenburg hotel, as we were, then De Schaar is almost on your doorstep: lucky us, lucky you! If you're anywhere else in Bruges please walk the couple of hundred metres to this very fine restaurant - you will not regret it.

It's in a lovely canalside villagey location, well in touch with the city centre but just far enough from it to feel a bit special and maybe even a bit untouristy, which in Bruges is a great thing to feel.

The Australian Black Angus rib-eye steak with Béarnaise sauce that I had here has gone straight into my Top 5 Restaurant Steaks Ever - it honestly was that good. My wife likes hers more or less running round the plate and pronounced it delicious. I like mine actually cooked and was very relieved that the chef had a perfectly sympathetic approach to this, producing a medium/well done steak that was nevertheless fantastically juicy and tasty. This does not always work out so I was thrilled with its deliciousness.

We had a lovely, light and not-too-filling ice-cream dessert that was beautifully presented.

Service is knowledgeable, pleasant, multilingual and unobtrusive.

I can't recommend this restaurant too highly to you. Please walk out a couple of minutes from the centre and treat yourselves!

Or party of 4 ate here for our first evening in Bruges and we all loved every course we ordered. We particularly recommend the mushrooms with snails in curry sauce starter and the steaks were superb. Really nicely paced service which gave enough time between courses for a relaxed evening. All the food came out nice and hot. Profiteroles were delicious.

Absolutely faultless, well worth the wait and certainly worth making the effort to walk from our hotel. Heidi was a little reluctant to take our booking as previous residents at our hotel had not turned up. Fools! If only they knew what they were missing! Between the four of us we sampled the sardines, the herring, and the salmon for starters, then T bone steak, lamb cutlets, rabbit kebab and grilled prawns as main, followed by profiteroles, and the sorbet selection with fruit coulis for dessert. One of our friends was not going to have a dessert until she tasted mine, and then immediately ordered one! My husband had the profiteroles and he said they just melted in his mouth. The same comment our friend made about her pasta accompaniment to the prawns. I have no hesitation on recommending it, but you must book otherwise you'll not get in!

We eat here on the first night of a three night stay in Bruges(our first visit) and the de schaar was a recommendation from the receptionist at our Hotel the Jan Brito. What a good recommendation, the meal, service and atmosphere was excellent.I had the rib eye steak and my wife had the salmon, we were going to go a second time on our final night but unfortunately this restaurant is closed Wed/Thus. I would recommend checking what night a restaurant is open if you find a nice one as the eating places in Bruges seem to have a revolving weekend when they close during the week to take account of exceptionally busy weekends.

It is located a short walk out of the busy areas, we loved it!
