Review of Groot Begijnhof

Groot Begijnhof
Reviewed June 13, 2013

This Beginjnhof is worth the visit even if it is quief far by foot from the city center. I was invited for a dinner at the faculty club. The place is realy beautiful and its roof architecture reminded me a reverse wood vessel.

The Begijnhof in Turnhout as similar to the ones in other cities, they all have one thing in common: They were established in ancient times for the widows and single elderly ladies that wanted to stay and live on their own. Most of the time dedicated to a devine belief. Already established in the 13th century, although first written about in 1340. It is an enclosure, of an oval shaped square with in the center a church 'Heilig Hart Kerk' built in 1662 - 1667. At the entrance is an impressive arc built in 1720.
Inside the square is a Begijnhof museum located in the Sint-Jansconvent (17th century). Interesting to walk around and enjoy the refurbished little houses with the original restored fasades.

We walked here one evening after dark from Oud Market. Must have taken about 15 minutes of striding and felt like a route march.
It is very atmospheric at night - quiet and dark. The only light peeps from windows. In some spots you can't see where your feet are treading and cobbles can be slippy.
Occasionally you could glimpse an interior - perhaps an oak beamed ceiling.
There was no one about...they had probably all gone to the Oud market ...it was just us idiots blundering around in the gloom. A couple might find it romantic - the kids just found it spooky and wanted to go.
It is much smaller than the Begijnhof at Bruges and although interesting I think on balance not worth visiting at night and skipping on valuable drinking time!

Recently attended a conference in the Begijnhof. It's a place you must visit if travelling to Leuven. So much history. It was lovely to walk along all the little streets. It felt like going back in time.

Very nice experience. all the stone roads, the architecture, the trandition and the general "mood" of the past in a place so close to a european city.
