Groot Begijnhof

Very nice experience. all the stone roads, the architecture, the trandition and the general "mood" of the past in a place so close to a european city.

A piece of history that you can find in the Groot Begijnhof. It is amazing how these few streets and houses were preserved, and that in some of them still families live. It is a bit further from the centrum, but it really worth a visit.

A first begijnhof from the 13th century was demolished in the 16th century to make room for the current ensemble of brick & sandstone houses. The rich begijnen lived in their private homes, the poor and sick stayed in the convent. Church service was mandatory. Today a mix of students, post-grads and university staff live here with their families - but this ensemble (restored and its use planned by the university) misses the walled-in serenity, some ateliers or cafes where you can sit outside and dream of long gone times.
Much more fun are the begijnhof in Brugge, Gent, Kortrijk or Lier which demonstrate the quiet atmosphere of a secluded community in the middle of a busy town.

Just by walking by you wouldn't expect this lovely little 'village' behind the walls. Very nice to stroll around the cobbled streets.

This is really a mystic place, peaceful and beautiful. There are no tourists and you can take pictures of empty medieval streets and old buildings and gardens... I love this place.
