“Technically a good place to stay, but don't do so if you are Dutch...”
Reviewed June 29, 2012

Quality of the facilities, cleanliness and breakfast is all okay, in fact better then what you might expect from a hostel for this price.

The problem comes with the staff and owner in particular:
I stayed here with group of friends (8 persons, mixed male/female all in late twenties, all Dutch...) and after a good night of sleep we had breakfast in the patio. There was not enough seating for all of us so we took some chairs (simple IKEA-model) out of the kitchen area. Immediately the owner came out telling us that those chairs were for 'inside-use' only. We put them back right away, but one of use dared to ask why there was such a thing as a chair which could only be used inside.

This was the point were the owner became downright intimidating: taking two of us out to the street to yell at them to let them know that 'Dutch people were always causing problems, making noise in the middle of the night, throwing up in the hallways' and more in general 'were breaking down the place'. This went on for about 20 minutes. In the end, he wanted to kick out the whole group, but after a while settled at just kicking out one of us (the one who questioned the inside-chair-thing, no refund). He made the rest of us pay a 250 euro deposit. As we weren't left with a lot of options we agreed... but it ruined our morning, and our stay was much less of pleasure after this incident.

To conclude: if you're Dutch and/or with a larger group of friends steer well clear of this hostel, unless of course, you know the owner is on vacation himself...

Cool little place with very modern showers and room set-up. Staff were nice enough and I had no issues with noise or rude people. When I booked online they seemed to be fully booked for one room for one night, meaning I would have to change from a 6 person dorm to a 4. But on arrival the manager informed me that they would put me in the 4 and keep me there the entire time - which was great news for me!

Room was small but clean, with a little sink and mirror. Good enough for a few nights.

Breakfast was basic but it did the job and I really enjoyed the coffee and tea machine. There's a smeg fridge!

Door access is given to you in code form - no keys or fobs needed!

Great Location, within walking distance of most things.

I arrived with a friend at 4pm on a Sunday having spent all day in the rain. When we checked into the hostel the staff were friendly however upon seeing our room we were provided a double room (with a very small double bed) when we had booked a twin. When I asked the staff about this I was told there were two types of twin rooms, one with a bunk bed and another with a double bed (?!?) but she could provide us with 2 blankets if that would help (not really the issues in our opinion!) When we asked to speak to the manager, he first questioned our booking and then told us he could put us in a dorm. He then said they dont issue refunds for cancellations despite the fact they did not provide us with the room we had paid for.
The hostel itself was clean enough and would be suitable for a weekend but the service itself was terrible. We went elsewhere to get a good nights sleep.

My fiance and I stayed for 3 nights here. We arrived in Leuven at about 4pm, checked in with no hassle, got our wifi and room passwords after full payment of room, and overall had a very comfortable stay. We booked a private double room, comes with a bunk bed (double bed at the bottom bunk), the room had large ceiling to floor windows (which were great!) and a small sink/mirror but the water was really cold, felt like needles poking my skin when i washed my face lol.

Pros:

- easy to find location - we didnt get lost walking from leuven train station (about 5min walk)
- hot drinks/water provided till 8pm, overall nice kitchen facilities
- great wifi connection
- really good security system (no keys or keycard - u have to key in a password to enter your room and to enter the hostel after hours when the reception is closed)
- cosy room, not too small, just nice for a budget hostel
- friendly staff (Lisa, hope you are well!)
- very nice ambience in the common area and garden
- shower has hot water and some toiletries provided when guests leave theirs behind

Cons:

- the shared toilet has an automatic motion generated system which switches on the lights, which is great but after awhile sitting on the toilet, the light shuts off and i had to struggle to find the sensor and move so that the light switches back on. funny at first, but annoying after the 3rd time (plus it was really dark - being in the dark makes me nervous)

- the walls were really thin and some guests were pretty noisy at night while we were trying to sleep (after 24hrs of travelling time from sg all the way to belgium - trust me we needed to rest) but we were too tired to bother abt the noise and slept anyway

- the heater in the room doesnt work. asked Lisa and she said the building has central heating - the temperature was bearable but i still felt slightly cold, which made it hard for me to sleep but i got used to it eventually

Overall - value for money, good place to stay, had no issues with the owner (i met him, he seems pretty ok to me - to be honest i was a little scared after reading the reviews but he was friendly and i had no problems during my stay there with him or other staff members) i would stay here again if i visit belgium again :)

In general it was a nice and clean hostel, but the owner has terrible moodswings. One moment he's friendly, the other he threatens to throw you out of the hotel at night because you're laughing too loud. It wasn't even 10pm yet so we were still allowed to make some noise. He took one of my friends to another room with him to 'discuss' this matter, but he only dissed her and us and said we were scum and that we could take our suitcases and leave if we said one more word. When we told him the day after that he had been completely unreasonable, he denied everything. One of the female employees was shocked when she heard our story about how he threatened us with the police and almost kicked us out. He didn't even care if we wouldn't be able to get home because there were no trains available. This person has serious psychological issues and no human empathy or reason at all. All in all, I don't advise staying there unless you're okay with tip-toeing around and whispering all the time.

During our stay at the Leuven City Hostel, we had a good time, untill we met the owner.

We were in the kitchen, playing cards and having fun. Suddenly, the owner came yelling at us. He said we were too loud and even blamed us for screaming in the hallway the night before. We also heard that noise, but it didn't come from us. He threatened to call the police and even told us to leave the hostel. It was 9:40 pm at that moment, so I don't think anybody was sleeping yet. An even if there was a problem, he could have just asked us to be quiet and we would have gone somewhere else or make less noise.

After calling us names and threaten to call our parents an exaggerate as much as possible, we left the hostel to let him cool down. It was impossible to reason with him.
We came back a few hours later and went to sleep (without making any noise!!). We heard the same noise that night as the night before. So it couldn't have been us that he heard. He didn’t even investigate who made that noise.

The next morning, the owner seemed normal, as if nothing happened the evening before.
When we checked out and told him that we were not pleased by the way he treated us and falsely accused us of things we didn't do and threatened to throw us out and leave us to look for another place to stay at 9:40 in the evening, he just got angry again.

So if you want to be sure that you can stay the entire night in a hostel without any problems, you mustn't come here.

Read the other reviews on www.zoover.nl, we were not the only visitors with problems!
I can't understand a man like that owns a hostel.

Small and cosy hostel, within walking distance of some nice sites. Rather small but very clean room (with bunk bed and sink), with an equally clean shared bathroom. The walls are paper-thin though, we could overhear the conversation in the other room, so we did not get a good night's sleep. Breakfast is included but a rather meager meal, best to make a trip to the backery or supermarket yourself. Overall an okay hostel to spend the night at.
