Acacia Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #95 of 116 Ghent B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 5, 2009

Acacia is a beautiful house in the heart of old Ghent. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable. We had a good continental breakfast with warm bread and fresh croissants with a view on a well kept garden. We were lucky because the weather was good considering the time of the year. The hosts were friendly and generous.

We booked this B&B based on the beautiful pictures on the website. Indeed, the rooms were spacious and spotless, and the house is very well taken care off. The location is very good, with the historic city center on walking distance.
So, all elements for a perfect vacation were present, weren't it for :
- guests have to pay upfront, in cash
- no key to enter the house, you have to buzz
- guests not allowed to stay in the house when the hosts are not there
- comments when there is dirt on the stairs
- comments when stalling a bike in the house
- comments when asking for additional toilet paper
- breakfast: size of the orange juice getting smaller with the day, bread of the previous day, standard fare, ...

The rigidity with which this B&B is run gave us the feeling we were staying in a boarding school. In view of the rate we were paying (150€/night) we definitely had expected more hospitality and flexibility.... A separation of the private and B&B part of the house would probably solve some of the problems.

My wife and I stayed at the Acacia B&B in April 2007 at Keizer Karelstraat 124 in Ghent. The second floor room we had was extremely spacious (indeed, it could have slept four, with the two additional, separated twin beds in the room along with our double bed) and very clean, and the room's decor reflected the fact that the Acacia's owners have only been in business for a year (i.e., nothing run-down-looking about the room at all). However, we were a bit put off by the fact that the owners did not give us a key to the building's front door. Instead, we had to buzz each time we wished to enter the building and have one of them let us in. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but during part of our stay both the owners had to be out of the building for a period of time, meaning that we had to coordinate our plans for that day with their availability to let us into the building. To some degree, this is what one might expect with a B&B, but at the same time it seems to us that it would have been simple to give us a key. Also somewhat off putting was that we were asked to pay in cash up front for our entire stay. Breakfast was provided in a somewhat small but charming back room that faced their well-cared-for, enclosed back yard (a quiet welcome to the traffic heard through the plentiful but not well insulated windows of our front-facing room). Options for breakfast included the standard continental fare, but don't expect hard-boiled eggs more than one morning of your stay (and don't bother asking for them on any other day -- you'll be turned down).
