Just returned from a mini break to Belgium. Spent 3 days at the Marriott in Ghent which was a great location and good hotel. Before our trip I was searching the net for attractions and things to do in Ghent. Came across iTours, liked their website and sent an email enquiry to them asking for a private family tour of Ghent historic centre. They were very quick and efficient in responding and giving all the options and price details.
Our guide was a lovely young guy called Nick who spoke excellent English. He met us at our hotel reception on time and then proceeded to take us on a 90 minute tour of the historic old town of Ghent. We visited all the main attractions and managed to get our bearings on a whistle stop tour that kept the kids (aged 9 and 13) interested and receptive throughout. We learnt about all the main sites, the history of Ghent and were taken to a few nice places off the beaten path as well. Our kids particularly liked the "Graffiti Alley" and some of the little side streets we went down, which we never would have found on our own.
Nick was a really affable chap and gave us a really good overview of the city in a relatively short space of time. We were then able to return to the areas we liked at our leisure and spend more time exploring over the next few days. I don't think we would have seen so much of the city or become so familiar with it in such a short period of time without having taken the tour. The benefit of a private tour is that you don't have all the waiting and trudging around with strangers you normally associate with a group tour, and you're never stuck at the back of a crowd, so you can always see and hear everything! Added to this the price for the tour was very reasonable given the level of personal service involved.
My 9 year old daughter said that "Nick was really good because he made us understand what it would have been like to live in Ghent a long time ago" and my 13 year old son said "every time we asked him a question Nick knew the answer which was cool" so there you go says it all really!
Added to the above, our guide gave us some great recommendations for restaurants, where to buy chocolates, the best place to eat waffles and introduced us the the famous Ghent "Nose" sweets.
I would really recommend iTours, we were really pleased with their service. if your looking for a good tour guide in Ghent give them a try!
