“Best place to stay in Ghent”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

The Ghent Marriott is a 5 star hotel. It is located in the heart of old town Ghent and when you walk out the back door of the hotel to the view of the canal with the century's old city as a backdrop you will literately be transported back in time. The staff was very attentive, friendly and for those of you like me, who failed to learn any Flemish at all - they speak fluent English. The rooms are large with a seating area and the beds were very comfortable, Lots of storage space, free wifi and plenty of power outlets for your electronics. The only negative is that if you want a room with a view of the canal you will need to spring for a more expensive room- but you are not in your room long enough to notice. You should also go ahead and purchase the breakfast each day as well- it offers a great buffet style service with many, many foods to choose from, as well as cook to order breakfast if you desire. If you are brave enough to try , the hotel has bicycle rentals for you to try to act as a local as well. Local sights, a large variety of restaurants, and access to the local tram service is less than a 5 minute walk in any direction. The hotel restaurant also has a outside seating area overlooking the canal to hang out, have a glass of wine ( or one Belgium's many brews) to people watch, stare at the beauty and relax. Ghent was our favorite place in Belgium to visit out of the 5 cities we visited. Had we stayed at another hotel I just do not believe we would have had the same experience- I came home relaxed and believing in dragons..so will you!

I chose this hotel when planning to propose to my now fiancée having never visited Ghent before. I emailed the hotel prior to my booking to explain my plans and the staff could not have been more helpful. When we arrived they knew exactly who I was and what I was planning and they helped me every step of the way. They helped with the timings and had champagne waiting in the room for us when we came back from dinner. They helped with places to visit, where to park the car, where to eat etc.
The hotel itself was clean and well presented and the room was excellent with a beautiful view over the river. Conveniently located in the centre and close to all of the main attractions I'm very glad I picked this hotel and very grateful to all the staff for their help.
Would definitely stay here again and might just make it a surprise again!

Location, great breakfast, helpful staff and did I mention the very best location?
Had a canal view room which was huge and wonderous looking out into the rain
Great food is less than 5 minutes in any direction
The canal is amazing.
Tip...Ghent is the perfect place to base to see Bruges, Brussels, and Antwerp. Ghent is easily worthy of a few days
When u take day trips, the walk back to the hotel from the train station is very easy and safe

We have stayed in this property twice. Both times have been wonderful experiences. The hotel staff provide outstanding service. The breakfast buffet is very special with a wide variety of cheeses, meats, breads, etc. With all of that being wonderful, the best part is the location and the views. It is located right on the river in "Old Town". Everything of interest is within walking distance. I would highly recommend getting a room with a view of the river. It is not only beautiful, but it is very interesting watching the people and boat traffic. At nights the lights in many of the wonderful old buildings are turned on, which provides an amazing scene. Highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Get a room with a river view

The Marriott is in a perfect location. The room was nice and bedding was extremely comfortable. The happy hour on Friday is also a nice touch. Internet connection however was somewhat weak in the room which was frustrating.

Stayed here for one night on my way through to Germany from the Uk. As mentioned by other reviewers the location is as close to the tourist friendly ancient port area of Ghent as it is possible to get. The boat trips up and down the canal being aboutb15ft from the front of the hotel . In fact during the 40 min trip (6.50 euro) you will be informed the Marriott building was the first brewery in Ghent. Outside is old inside very nice. I stayed in a junior suite, all oak beams and mod cons, a beautiful room. Do take note of using Drabstraat as the gps address to park, its a rabbitt warren getting in and out of Ghent by car. Check in and staff very friendly, area maps offered without asking etc. no exec lounge, voucher for drink and snack instead. My only problem was at beakfast, service was not good, didnt get a tea or coffee throughout the meal, and no sign of any staff. All those who arrived whilst i was there suffered the same fate. Shame as the view of the canal is gorgeous. Went back to room and had a hot drink there instead.
Other than that minor hiccup i would not hesitate to stay here again and to recommend it to anyone. For once deservedly no. 1 hotel in Ghent.

I saw a little detoriation compared to last year. The bathroom, especially the bath (and curtain) had some moisture and we had a heavy smell from a drain. We mentionned the moisture at the reception but no action was taken, simply marked. When we mentionned the next day the heavy drain smell, another girl at the reception immediatly suggested another room. Just a pity that we noticed the next morning that we had sagging mattrasses when we looked for the reason of back pain. The breakfast is nice but quite industrial. At breakfast there is a lack of supervision (or work can be done better with less people). The dinner in the Korenhuis was quite good as the service.
Location and hotel concept are superb. The lobby with bar is also unique.
