“Nice central hotel”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

I stayed here one day. The position is perfect, really in the center. Rooms are nice and comfortable, good breakfast. The personnel was nice as well and helpfull. We had anyway a huge issue with this hotel, with 60 rooms booked and then cancelled by mistake few weeks before. They did the best to solve this, but did not give us one night, that the group had to spend in a other hotel.

I stayed in the Ghent Marriott for three nights in March. The central location of the hotel was what sold it for us and it was the ideal place to explore the sites of Ghent from as nothing was too far a walk away. It was also nice to be close to the canal. Inside the hotel has a big atrium area with rooms on floors overlooking it, with glass lifts to take you to your floor. There's a bar and table area in the atrium which has a happy hour on Fridays from 5-7 where the drinks are very reasonable (I think they were half price).

Our room was a decent size and furnished to a contemporary style. The bed was comfortable with a soft mattress and plenty of pillows. There were also tea and coffee-making facilities in our room and I was pleased that this included some herbal teas too. Our stay was quiet. Even though our room was opposite a lift, this did not disturb us at all. I found the hotel staff to be helpful they promptly checked us in and arranged us a taxi back to the station for our journey home. Our room was also cleaned to a good standard.

We had a one night stay for a flying visit to Ghent and we had a fairly standard room that had two double beds (two adults and two children), with a rate that included breakfast. In the end to make the booking for a single room for 2+2 we had to call the hotel directly as the website couldn't offer a single room for all of us. this was hardly a bother though and the chap we spoke to was helpful and efficient.

The room was large enough for what we needed, and was very clean and well appointed, and felt modern.

A bonus was the happy hour (half priced drinks with free tasty bar snacks) in the afternoons in the lobby bar; which was comfortable and bright with lots of natural light streaming through the large open atrium. More hotels should follow suit with the happy hour, as often hotel bars are empty due to being too expensive and hence there is also no atmosphere. At this hotel, the bar was full; which was great. the free bar snacks were tasty hot items prepared from the kitchen, and included spring roll / samosa type pickings.

Breakfast was also very good, albeit a bit pricey, but no more so than most hotels. The buffet had a good offering of tasty hot and cold dishes as well as cereals, yoghurts, etc but also a waffle machine (not that we used this).

Overall, for us, a nice pleasant stay.

Quite simply, can not fault this hotel at all.

I could mention the pleasant aroma when you walk in. I could mention that the hotel is SPOTLESS. I could mention its beautiful design and modern rooms. I could mention their comfortable beds but the thing that stands out above all are the staff.

They can't do enough for you and are so polite and friendly. Exceptional mention must go to the staff at breakfast - very attentive and so friendly. You could not ask for better people.

Room Tip: You've got nothing to worry about - all rooms are good!

We stayed for two nights in February. Very beautiful suite on the top floor overlooking the roof-tops of Ghent. The room had just been renovated and had more of the feel of a contemporary styled condo that a single bachelor would live in. There was some construction going on but hotel staff left a note apologizing for the inconvenience, and included with the note a very cute set of chocolate tools as a gift. The construction did not bother us a bit as it was only ongoing during the day.

The location is great...right on a canal near the old medieval center of town. Very charming. Lots of good restaurants, bars, etc. within a very short walk.

Another nice touch was that the hotel rented bikes for a reasonable fee. I rented them one morning so we could ride down to St. Peters square to catch a bicycle race that was in town that day.

Our room came with coupons for a drink and appetizer at the bar, as well as for breakfast. Unfortunately we never really figured out how to get service at the bar...it was almost like we were invisible. We were able to get a drink after about 10minutes of trying to waive the bar-tender down. Unfortunately, when we came back later that night for desert...we sat for 20minutes and ended up leaving empty-handed. We had better luck in the restaurant for breakfast.

My biggest complaint, which I have still not resolved, relates to my bill. When I checked in I specifically told the hotel staff that I wanted my bill denominated in Euros not dollars (this was the only hotel I stayed in during this trip that gave me the option of using dollars). The US dollar exchange rate they give you while in Europe is much less favorable then what your own bank in the U.S. will give you when you pay via credit card (assuming you are coming from the U.S. which I realize many of you will not be). Well, even after reminding them when I checked out, they still charged me in dollars. This added about $60 to a two night tab (1.32 vs 1.47 dollars per euro). In any case, just make sure you are clear with your instructions and get a copy of the bill if you are paying with a bank card from a non-Euro country. Aside from the mistake on my bill, the front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Overall, I'd would return on my next trip to Ghent.

First of all we would like to thank you for your fedback about your stay in out hotel.Thank you for the time you’ve taken to inform us about the problems you have experienced.

We are very sorry to hear about the miscommunications with your bill (the conversion of Euros to Dollars) as well as the lack of service in the bar. We aim to go always for all our clients an extra mile and regret that you did not get that feeling in all the outlets of our hotel.

We will be very happy to welcome you again and proof that we are able to do the opposite as you experienced recently. Please feel free to contact us to discuss the situation for more explanations.

Once again we would like to apologize for the inconvenience, especially since this is not the high standard of service we thrive to provide as a Marriott Hotel.

Great location, well-designed hotel which retains the old frontage onto the canal, but has modern rooms and an open, light atrium inside. Reception staff very friendly and helpful - I asked for a map, but they were extra helpful by asking where we wanted to go and drawing out the route for us. Room was a good size (we had a deluxe bedrooom with king size bed). The Friday happy hour was great value, with half price drinks and a few free nibbles (brought around by the waiters).

We turned up in our car (set your satnav for Drabstraat) and were able to park in their underground car park without booking, but it was expensive (23 euros for 24 hours). At least they were flexible about allowing us to pay for it as we checked out, but leaving it in there for a few more hours while we did some shopping - they validated the ticket when we came back so we could leave. With hindsight I'd have investigated the public parking as we didn't need our car for the stay.

Wi-fi is free - enter the username and password they give you at reception and bookmark the page to get back on after 24 hours or taking your phone away from the hotel. You don't need to enter your room number - scroll down or up to find the username/password fields.

We went to Drankencentrale de Hopduvel to buy some Belgian beer - they had a huge selection at reasonable prices.

Negatives: there was no view from our room, just a modern building a few metres away, but that was OK, we didn't spend much time looking out of the window! Breakfast wasn't included with our rate, but there were plenty of local places to get good breakfasts. I'd agree with the other review that service in the bar could be a little slow - you have to get someone's attention - they could do with one more person serving at peak times.

Room Tip: Our room was at the side of the hotel and was quiet. Apparently, there are more expensive rooms and...

We have stayed several times in this hotel.
Wonderful architecture outside, very modern inside.
Service is fine.
The must is its situation !
You just park your car in the parking nearby and forget it for the rest of your stay !
I strongly recommend.
