“Very Nice Hotel”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

The location is excellent, a short few minutes walk to the Graslei area with the canal, restaurants, shops & historic locations. Our very nice room had a problem with the lavatory stopper and since the hotel was full, we were moved to a suite across the street to de Flandre's longer term rentals.
The suite was well appointed with full kitchen, including washer/dryer. The suite appeared newly renovated with quality fixtures in the bath. Our room rate remained at the rate we had booked.
The reception staff were most accommodating and assisted at a moments notice.
I can highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Our initial room fronted on the street. The suite did as well. Both quite nice.

I was in Ghent for both business and leisure purposes. Ghent is a lovely city with lots of bars and restaurants and plenty of things to do in the evening (the university also makes it a very lively city). Although the hotel's very central location in the old city center it is easily accessible by car. This comes in very handy when you wish to combine the evening joys of the old city center and its restaurants with day time business in the outskirts of the city.(f.e. Port of Ghent)

The staff was very friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet was elaborated and fresh.

The WIFI in the hotel is free and the high speed allows proper use.

This was a lovely place to stay for a few days. The location is excellent - you can walk everywhere and reach the central canals in a couple of minutes. You are spoiled for choice for good places to eat too. Breakfast at the hotel is great - especially the cold selections - but if the hotel is busy, you might want to stake a claim to a table with a jumper as one morning our table was taken and we didn't have anywhere to sit for a while!!
This is not a particularly exciting hotel to stay in, but it was great for a few days.

I was in Ghent for about a week for a conference at the college. The venue was only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and the Graslei area just around the corner. Plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance. Room was nice and clean, shower nice and hot and powerful. Breakfast was fine, I wouldn't rave about the hot breakfast but the juices, breads, cereals etc were fine. I liked that they had different dried fruits and nuts to put onto your cereal or yoghurt. Sometimes they were a bit slow to get to you for tea and coffee but otherwise no complaints. They don't have a locked room for leaving your luggage but we left ours anyway since we felt that it would be safe. Having read some other reviews I'm glad I had a better experience. It was 30 degrees in Ghent the week I was there so I was far from cold! Overall it was exactly what I was looking for, clean, decent bed, decent breakfast and close to the conference I was attending.

Upon arrival at the hotel at 1:00PM we were told that check in isn't until 3:00PM, and we can leave our bags in the unlocked, dark and dirty closet to the right of the reception. This wouldn't have been so insulting had the hotel not been practically empty or if they had a secure place to leave our belongings. After reading the other reviewers story about having a coat stolen, I am actually very thankful that we did not have the same experience.

The door to the room we were given at 3:00PM was left open, so the room was cold inside and smelled of a very heavy, cheap room fragrance. After several attempts to get the heat to work, we called down to the front desk who informed us that the heat hadn't been turned on yet and would be working tomorrow. So management brought us up a dinky space heater. When we asked about the heat the next day, we were given a different story, told that the heating system was actually broken.

In terms of our room, there was a duvet cover over the bed with cigarette burns in it and a carpet full of stains. The towels were very cheap and thin and the shower door was not well attached, meaning the bathroom floor was soaked each time we took a shower. Not exactly a four star experience in our freezing cold room.

I was woken up each night from bug bites.. bugs that probably came in through the door or window which faced directly to the courtyard. There was a mosquito repellent plug-in inside the room.. but it obviously wasn't working well.

There was construction going on the entire time in the hotel which began promptly at 8AM. Rise and shine! Each time we walked to our room we were greeted by a basket of dirty laundry, empty beer bottles which were left in the hallway for days and the smell of the staffs cigarette smoke.

I agree with the other reviewer about the breakfast. The warm options seemed a little sketchy (eggs, bacon) but the cold options for breakfast were incredible. They really have everything from pastries to cereals, all types of breads and cheeses. And it's all beautifully displayed.

This hotel could be great but unfortunately our experience was not. I hope the manager reads this and makes some improvements.

Room Tip: Ask for one that has been renovated. And if the heat doesn't work, ask for a refund.

Check-in at Hotel de Flandre is possible as from 3PM. Early check-in is never guaranteed but when guests arrive at the hotel before 3PM our reception team does their utmost to accommodate the guests as soon as possible. We do have a secure luggage room, in front of the reception, wich is under constant surveillance of our reception team.

I would like to apologise for the fact that there was no heating in your room. Unfortunately this was caused due to a leak in the kettle. Although we immediately called someone to have a look at it, it took some time to have it fixed.

With regard to the bug bites, I would like to inform you that the hotel undergoes a preventive treatment every year. Unfortunately we cannot completely avoid one bug from entering the room through the door.

I would like to stress out that the entire team of Hotel de Flandre takes a personal interest in giving our guest the best possible experience. In order to keep up with our four-star standard, renovations are necessary.

I am aware that all of these issues must have been very unpleasant for you during your stay. Therefore I would like to express my sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

The location, near the Design Museum and across the canal from the the Graslei could hardly be topped. The rooms are smallish, but clean and comfortable. Blessedly, they are air conditioned (temps were hitting 30 Celsius every day). The staff were helpful to newcomers, tolerating our French long enough to be polite, then switching to flawless English. You can store luggage when arriving or leaving. Breakfast was very ample by our standards, including scrambled eggs and bacon, cheeses and cold cuts, various breads, yogurts, cereals and fresh fruit -- but it was not -- as another comment notes -- the full English stomach-busting, cholesterol-laden experience some Brits consider normal first thing in the morning. It can get busy, but service was prompt and cheerful. The Spar grocery store across the street is a real plus for picking up snacks and supplies.

Room Tip: If your room faces the street, be sure to close the windows. Deliveries to local businesses take pla...

Stayed 3 nights band b at start of September in room 444 described as a loft with 2 attic style windows.Staff pleasant and informative at reception, room fine with some drawbacks e.g. shower in bath unattached to wall, messy - safe on wardrobe shelf unattached to anything, unsafe.Room was clean with good bedding, tea and coffee facilities and good t.v..Cold food at breakfast was good, hot food was greasy and unpalatable.Service at breakfast was friendly but rather inefficient,no obvious management input.Construction was continuing in hotel around the central courtyard area which seemed to have already been developed with brutalist naked steel stairs and walkways out of sync with the rest of a fine old building.Overall we were quite happy but then came the HOLE.On the morning of departure we were awakened at 8.30 by workmen banging who were on ascaffold which had appeared outside our windows .We closed the blinds and went to breakfast. On return to room we had to climb up 4 stairs as work had apparently caused the lift to break down. However we partially packed with window blinds closed and went out to shop On return at 11.00we again climbed stairs and were met outside room by amaid who seemed upset and warned us that there was a HOLE in our room.As I entered the room two workmen walked out past meand to my shock I was confronted by another worker staring at me through a large window sized hole in the exterior room wall.I said some angry things in English and French as we removed our valuables from the insecure safe, shoved our clothes into cases and got downstairs as quickly as possible. When I asked to speak to the manager Iwas told she was on holiday-therefore no one in charge -therefore shambles. Obviously this place is not being managed with sufficient care for paying customers,to put it mildly.

Room Tip: Make sure the room does not have a hole caused by building work

Guest comments are of paramount importance to us, both in terms of measuring our standard of service and in our on-going endeavour to give our guests the best possible experience at Hotel de Flandre.

To keep up our standard as a four-star hotel, renovations are necessary on a regular basis.

However, I would like to apogolize for the inconvenience you have experienced during your stay. One of our workmen was working on the roof that morning when something accidentally went wrong. I do agree that this is not the normal course of events in a four-star hotel but they did react immediately and fixed the hole in the ceiling of the room that same day.

Again, I would like to express my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused during your stay.
