For once, the hype is justified. Much is expected from this young chef and he delivers. No, he overperforms.
The full menu is 5 courses, but the first starter consisted of several small plates that other restaurants would serve as separate dishes: each plate was a balanced composition.

Every course was consistently on a very high level. The preparation with ox tail powerful but not overpowering. I opted for the additional winter truffle and it did add an extra dimension. 15 euro is not cheap for some truffle shavings, but in the context of the dish: worth it. Only the main dish (farm chicken) could have done with a little more aroma and 'depth'.

The most pleasant surprise was probably the bill. This level of gastronomy at this price point is hard to believe. In fact, I cannot imagine that this can be maintained, but Vrijmoed will still be on top of my list for a re-visit if prices do take a hike.

This place is peerless in Gent (sorry Vitrine e.a.). And it will develop even further if the chef can develop his signature. I have little doubt that he will.

What's there to say? Michelin star well deserved. I'm already looking for my next booking at Vrijmoed. If you intend to give this place a try (you definitely should), plan well in advance, it's fully booked months ahead. Without a doubt the best restaurant in the centre of Ghent.

Michael Vrijmoed started a restaurant in the center of Ghent. And not just a restaurant. He and his whole team will welcome and surprise you with delicious dishes. Realy amazing for such a young man. Carefuly presented, full of tastes, a joy for your tongue and with a never ending smile of the whole staff. If you have a chance, just go for this reservation! It's a must.

In December, we enjoyed a fabulous lunch at Vrijmoed. It was our third visit so far and, as on the previous two occasions, we were delighted with the delicious food, the creativity as well as consistency of the kitchen team, and the topnotch service. Our friends and family, who joined us for a special occasion, were equally impressed with how exceptional standards were maintained from the first amuse-bouche, throughout the 5-course menu, to the mignardises at the end. The sommelier's wine pairings were also inspired. As Ghent foodies, we're very happy that Vrijmoed has joined our city's culinary world: for us, Vrijmoed has quickly managed to establish itself as Ghent's best restaurant.

Standing for years aside Peter Goossens this chef shows in his plates today that he not only learned the job there, but with adding his own view on food he got already his first Michelin star. And believe me, this is only the beginning!
