Really good eatery on the main drag at Graslei, opposite the water boat terminus. It has a forecourt with gas heating that apparently works well in arctic conditions. We opted to go indoors on the first floor. Tastefully decorated dining hall - pleasant staff. Opted for lightly cooked scallops on a leeks and white wine sauce. Mega-interesting and large salad with walnuts and other delights. Their Ghent stew was delicious. Beautifully tender beef in a rich gravy. Good selection of beer. Thoroughly recommend the Westmalle Duppel. Goes so well with the stew. With drinks and tips paid around 90 euros - this is a place to occasionally push the boat out.

A bunch of exceptional buildings grouped together and then lining up along the channels. If it wasn't for the cold wind I would have stayed admiring the view much longer.

This very scenic and historical part of the city provides plenty of photo opportunities together with plenty of places to sit and while away the odd hour either at a canalside bar or simply with a picnic lunch. This location is provided with free wifi, coutesy of the city of Gent, and is the starting place for several boat rides on the canals.
If in need of the loo, the FREE toilets situated opposite the new tourist information centre on the Graslei side of the water proved invaluable.

Graslei and Korenlei, on either side of the river, are what gives Ghent is fairy-tale feeling. The grand and elegant town houses with ornate architecture, the spires in the background, the castle, and the whole effect reflected in the waters of the river. It is truly a picture out of a story book. Ghent is definitely the place where you would want to stroll along the river banks to admire either side from the opposite bank. Every building in the row is admirable on its own and yet the whole effect diminishes nothing from the beauty of the individual houses. The cosy cafes and restaurants are also part of this beautiful canvas and in fact are the spots where congregations of people add the lively touches to a scenery that can also stand on its own.

We made our way down from St. Michael's Bridge to the west side of the canal, or the Korenlei. When we couldn't find a suitable restaurant for lunch there, we crossed another bridge back to the east side, the Graslei, and had a great lunch at one of the terrace restaurants there, the Witte Leeuw. While we ate, we were able to appreciate the vista of the many colorful gabled billings on the Korenlei side. A great place to chill and just take in the view!
