“A gem in a lovely town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2014

Seeing the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb was so terrific. It is currently under restoration but they are doing it right, a couple panels at a time so that visitors can see the bulk of it. The audio guide was well done and the guides themselves were very helpful.

The church is huge and well worth the time to walk through all the side chapels.

“"Absolutely must see"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2014

If you go to Ghent and do not go see Jan van Eyck's "The Mystic Lamb," you are missing an opportunity to see one of the greatest works of art ever made. A masterpiece of 15th Netherlandish painting, this huge altarpiece is tucked away in a corner of the cathedral and you do have to pay 4 euro to get in. You'll get an audio guide with that, so it's a small price to pay. The cathedral itself is lovely but the star of Ghent is "The Mystic Lamb." Go as early as you can so that you can avoid being boxed into a small room with too many people.

“The Mystic Lamb”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2014

An unexceptional city cathedral, but a must-see for the exceptional paintings especially the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, open alterpiece. There is a small charge but a very informative audio guide is included in the price.

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2014

I'm not a religious person, but did enjoy a walk around the cathedral. The place positively oozes history and has that ooh so calming atmosphere that is associated with places of worship. 30 minutes well spent.

“Interesting Cathedral”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014

Having seen dozens of temples, mosques, shrines, churches and cathedrals (of all denominations) around the world, this one was certainly one of the more interesting, as you could clearly see the remnants of the church that had been there prior to the building of the cathedral. There is a distinct change in architectural design between the two and this is especially noticeable in the crypt.
The main building is predominantly Gothic in style with the internal décor, statues etc. similar in style to many other Catholic churches. That said, it is still very impressive in its own right, with a number of beautiful artworks and an impressive roof construction when viewed internally.

The main artwork was a little disappointing not because of the artwork but because it was difficult to see. The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb is currently sited in a small chapel to the left of the main entrance and even with a few people in there it is almost impossible to get to the centre to get a good look at the centre panel of the painting - people will just not move. Also, the paining is held too high off the ground, making it difficult to see the upper parts of the picture. That said, the quality of the artwork is fantastic - well worth a look, although having seen it we found we could examine it better on the internet - see "http://closertovaneyck.kikirpa.be".
