We walked to St Bavo's to see the Rubens painting and the fantastic architecture of the cathedral. We were not disappointed.

What an amazing place. The details and overall majesty are overwhelmingly awesome. It's a shame you can't take photos inside though.

Aside form its spiritual significance, this is unmissable for its art and architecture. Some very dramatic Baroque sculpture and a pulpit that resembles a cloud-vision in a forest crowded with angels and marble figures, also endless saints in side-chapels and some ancient monstrances and reliquaries in the crypt. Sculptors may like to see, in the crypt, a very ancient crucified Christ so aged that it seems to be returning to its tree-state, tucked behind a pillar, very moving. Then there is the Van Eyck Altarpiece with its eerie presences of the naked Adam and Eve at the top.

The cathedral itself is as good-looking as any other in mediaeval Europe, but the attraction is the Van Eyck brothers' 'Adoration of the Lamb'. You can appreciate this remarkable artwork on its own merits, but do buy a written/audio guide, look it up on the net, sly up to the back of a guided tour, to get its incredible history and to understand the significance of its panels.

Try and avoid weekends as it gets very busy, and obviously at certain times on Sunday visiting will be limited by masses taking place.
