Owner description: The only surviving "castle of the count."

Gravensteen castle was the first thing we saw each morning from our hotel, so it was the first place we visited. It looks just like a Disney castle, only real! The building, ramparts and towers were fun to explore and the views were great. The torture exhibition was fairly grisly and the weaponry first class.

Not many cities can boast a medieval castle right in the midddle of town. The 'Castle of the Counts" was a magical surprise on our walking tour, especially when we were greeted by a knight in full armour at the entrance. While we visited, a wedding party was having their pictures taken inside and on the grounds. Amazing to gaze at how they built ( or rebuilt ) this structure. Really enjoyed the weapons display and the terrific views from the walls of historic Ghent. A must see.

This semi-restored castle has retained its integrity, partly through not being over-restored. The emphasis on torture equipment was a little excessive for me, but the weaponry was surprisingly interesting. Nice to be able to wander without feeling too proscribed. Good views of the town from the towers as well.

I do love castles, and this one has a moat, an inner keep & courtyard, and walls to walk on. Game of Thrones, but real. Inside was a weapon exhibition, with cool weapons, and there was an exhibit of torture instruments. The view from the top of the castle is excellent, and is great for taking photo's (better than from the top of the St. Nicolaes church). The stairs were sometimes steep, and there was no falling protection from the outer walls, so if you visit with childeren, don't let them out of sight. I visited quite a lot of castles, and this one is for certain one I won't forget!

The castle in Gent is the main tourist attraction of the area.
What I liked: their exhibits are top-notch, not really in the display, but in the artifacts themselves. They were so well preserved and there was a great assortment of very old, original objects. ALso, the view is great from the top!
What I didn't like:
The castle was mostly reconstructed in the early 20th century, so most of it isn't original.
The video tour (free) was kind of weird (it was a movie and didn't really give you much history or information about the building… it was more of a storyline). Next time I would skip it.
The display cases were inconsistent with having English captions. I can speak Dutch so I was mostly okay, but it would have been annoying to have to carry around an extra card just to read the captions.

Overall, I would recommend you do this, but it's not going to be the best European castle you've ever been to.
