Gravensteen Castle was an interesting stop on a recent visit to Ghent. It is right across from the tourist office, which should be anyone’s first stop. The self-guided tour is well laid out and informative. Be aware that the circular stone stairways are a bit tricky to navigate. Although the plaques describing the rooms are multi-lingual, the notes on particular exhibits of armor and such are not. Also, the room of torture is not for the squeamish. Watch your step, but this is a Ghent must see.

The architecture of the Castle is fantasic. The views from the top are great. There's a good collection of medieval weapons, if you like that stuff.

My understanding is that the castle was rebuilt in modern times, so not sure how original it is. But it is still very impressive. Not sure how you could go to Ghent and skip this, definitely worth a couple of hours while your exploring the city.

The written information on the placards (and guide handout in the room of artifacts) is different than the handset tour included with the ticket. Ensure you get the handset at stop #1 of the tour and watch the movies on it AND read the placards. The movies depict better what life would have been like in each room. Stop #3 requires asking the room guide for a laminated handout to describe (excellently) each display in detail. This castle is a fabulous museum!
