“Just terribly misplaced - the Hall of Shame”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

It may divide the city in believers and not-believers, and on stand-alone it may have interesting architectural/technical features (that I fail to see to be honest, but I'm not a specialist). But for sure, this is extremely misplaced, just a self-centric prestige project dropped in a splendid medieval site. It is disruptive, it is just ugly concrete with some roof... Cannot imagine a second this would be possible in other homogenuous medieval/historical sceneries as, randomly, Siena or Bruges. Unbelievable this came through...
There are good examples of nice combination of ancient and modern architecture. This clearly is not.

“Unbelievable atrocity”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

One of the main disasters afflicting a European historical city since post-WW2 reconstruction years. Disproportionate, ill-placed, costly, totally useless, and with an adjacent concrete belltower of mind-boggling horror. Moreover, a complete breach of governance towards UNESCO, who was not even consulted despite the World Heritage status of the Belfry site, and towards the Ghent population, who by referendum had voted for a simple, building-free green park. The favourite nicknames locally used for this "Stadshal" are "Schandhal" (Hall of shame, Scandal) or "Schaapstal" (sheep shed).

“Finally!”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

Finally the ugly parking at the 19th century artificiel windy square is just a bad memory of bad 20th century urban planning. Now a wonderful, beautiful and useful modern building, in harmony with the older neighbours, stands proudly where in far gone times, was a lively medieval quarter. Thanks to the fine bistro and the little park, this will be the place to be in the next decades!

“Beautiful”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

Last time i was in the center of ghent there used to be a horrible parking lot on this square, now its transformed to a beautiful, green place with an interesting markethall. i can imagine the public concerts and activity's going on there :)
Its gable roof matches the old building's roof lines. If you stand in the garden the old belfry looks really impressive!
Its an architectural beauty that definitely makes the square next to the famous 'korenmarkt' an -just as- hot place to hang out!

“interesting”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

The City Hall is an interesting building in the historic center of Gent. It's beautiful to see how modern 21st century architecture is combined with medival architecture. The building is in harmony with the historic building that surround it. The "Grand Café" in the cellar is nice.
I frequently visit Gent and I can only say that this is an improvement. This space has been a dusty parking lot for decades. It's nice to see how this space has been improved.
