This is a somewhat out of the way functioning brewery. It is small inside, but lovely. We didn't take a tour (was there one?) and had no food. But.... we did try beer flights and were very pleased. So much so we all purchased beers to take back to the hotel.

Oh... the urinals are worthy of a mention ;-)

If I were in Ghent, I would come here again!

We visited the Gruut Brewery during our city trip to Ghent. To be honest, there is not so mucht to see of the brewing process, but the explanation and story given by the personnel is interesting (and humorous). They have a very nice lunch and diner menu and they will of course use beer in their recipes. A nice place to visit just outside the crowded city centre of Ghent.

My wife and I visited the Gruut brewery late in the afternoon and the place was heaving.
We were lucky to find a table and quickly ordered our beers even though the staff were rushed off of their feet. There was a good atmosphere as there were two tables full of people having been on or going on the brewery tour. We both tried two different beers and found them all to be very flavoursome, the stronger ones being 8 and 9 percent proof.
All in all a great way to spend a few hours of our weekend and we would definitely visit again if we were ever in Ghent again.

Great find and a well kept secret. Easy to find if you know where and great welcome on arrival - The smell of the beer brewing and people enjoying themselves. Greeted immediately and recommended a table. Menu showed mostly the 5 De Gruut beers (there were probably others) in large pictures and fanciful colours. We had the White and the Amber between us and stayed for more.

What I can only assume was a brewery tour was going on next to us - A lot of possibly students being lectured to in Flemish and not looking that enamered with the process. We were far happier!

Would recommend if you have the time - A lot nicer than a lot of the other Gent welcomes we received over the weekend and as we were leaving, the guy was happy to talk about whatever he was shovelling out of the tuns (mash?).

Happy drinking

We visited Gruut in December with the idea of being able to combine good beers and good food in a unique atmosphere (it's not every day you get to eat in a functioning brasserie!). We arrived around 1pm and the place was empty except for one other couple. There is a difference to make here between the beers and the food served - although since we were looking primarily for a place to have a nice meal, we were highly disappointed!

The beer: quite unique, brewed with fresh herbs (although which ones we don't know!). They have an interesting formula whereby you can taste all five for 11€ (going from lightest to strongest!). Overall a very good discovery

The food: the menu is quite basic, with only 5 main dishes. Unfortunately, two were already unavailable (for lack of delivery...) so we resorted to the Waterzooi, a typical dish from Ghent which, when well prepared, can be exquisite. This was not the case here... For a hefty 16€ we got a very small portion of completely dry chicken soaking in a kind of tepid chicken broth with a few poor pieces of carrot. Very bad and clearly not fresh/reheated food.

We actually sent the food back, after being unable to take a third bite... The waiter was extremely nice and understanding. We ended up leaving after paying only the beers (there was no way we were paying 16€ a dish, but the waiter of course understood this).

Too bad, because it seems the place was eager to promote this beer-food combination. But it's clearly not working. I would simply stick to going there to taste the beers, lots of other places for food in Ghent!
