We were shown up to our room (no lift) up several flights of leaning old stairs (very quaint but tricky with a large case!) the room itself was large with lovely beams, nice bedding, mini bar, hair dryer and nice en suite. (No teas/coffee facilities but this is normal for this area) The finishing touches were missing,it's as if it's not quite sure what it's style should be. It mixes old (beams) with modern pictures, masculine decor, then old gothic mirrors on the stairs. Then to get in and out of the hotel you walk through an Irish bar. Where you can have breakfast if you wish We didn't eat there so can't comment on food but it looked ok! The staff were lovely and friendly and it was immaculate however it was very noisy, very little soundproofing between rooms, and I don't think this is helped by the wooden flooring as this carries noise
Parking was arranged for us but it wasn't a huge car park so you might struggle with a big car
I don't think this is somewhere I would stay again although the location is good, just a short walk into the centre

Location - A 5-10 minute walk to the historical quarter. The walk is along a pretty canal/river with beautiful buildings and a cathedral. This walk iis also beautiful at night with all the buildings and bridges lit up and it feels extremely safe in the area.

Hotel - We stayed in a room for 6 adults. 1 double bed, 2 single beds and a bunk bed. The room was very spacious considering 5 adults were staying together. The beds are rediculously comfortable. After a long day of travelling / siteseeing these beds are like heaven. The room was extremely warm and inviting when returning from a day out in the cold. The shower pressure and temperature was perfect and the TV had plenty of channels including English. (No tea and coffee making facilities). Don't forget that you have to pay city tax on check out.

Irish Bar connected to the Hotel - Downstairs there is an Irish Pub. Really quaint and old worldly with loads of boothes and corners to hide away in. Fires burning and extremely friendly irish staff. We had a meal in the bar the first night and the food was definitely 8/10 and great value for money. You also get a free drink each if your stating at the hotel which was a pleasant surprise.

Ghent - definitely my favourite city in Belgium. I prefer it to both Bruges and Brussels. The city is spotlessly clean and the buildings, churches and the castle are very gothic and grand. Loads of art galleries, bars and restaurants. I absolutely adore Ghent and if would highly recommend it if you are still deciding.

Hotel Onderbergen is the perfect place for visiting the fantastic city of Ghent. We only stayed there one night and had a very small double room - but we knew that when we booked as it was said to be a single room with a double bed. The room was modern and well equipped and had a homy feeling to it, like the whole place. Luckily there is no traffic outside as the windows didn´t keep out the noise very well. The staff was very helpful and charming. The hotel has its own Irish bar - also a nice place. Only two minutes walk to the old city centre and the shopping areas. The railway station is also in walking distance (20 mins).

Hotel Onderbergen is by far the friendliest hotel I have ever visited. From the time I tried to make reservations online and started an email exchange, the staff – especially Krystina and Jenny -- were extremely kind and helpful. They gave us directions for busses from the train station, but we took a taxi, which was a good idea for us. The location is hard to find if you don’t know where you are. However, the location is also ideal for exploring the historic and shopping parts of Ghent and for activities at the University of Ghent – an easy walk. On arrival, Jenny knew who we were and offered us either a ground-floor room or a quieter 3rd-floor abode. The quiet sounded like a good option until we tried to climb the narrow, steep stairs (no elevator). Jenny even carried all our luggage up to what is in reality the fourth level, but we decided our 68-year-old knees could not do that climb several times a day. Our ground-floor room with a separate room and dining table was modern and very clean. I would like to hire the maid who cleaned every day; she was very, very thorough. The bed was great. Bathroom was very small, but had brand-new fixtures and a shelf and windowsill for toiletries. Heat from radiators was very responsive and nice. The hotel is attached to an Irish pub, which has great food and friendly really-Irish wait staff. For a friendly, welcoming base in Ghent, Hotel Onderbergen cannot be beat.

Room Tip: Even ground floor with a window to the street was quiet.

Aside from the awful roadworks currently going on around the hotel, the location of this hotel is great! Located alongside the canal it's a short walk to the shops, bars and restaurants of lovely ghent.

The hotel itself is very comfortable. We stayed in a family room which consisted of a double bed plus bunk beds. Breakfast is served downstairs in the Irish pub which was lovely also.

A big thank you to Kristina who directed us to the hotel when we became lost in the roadworks. Would recommend this hotel absolutely.

We booked the night before we arrived. We had an e mail the morning of our arrival to check what time we would arrive, to warn us of the road works nearby and to give us an alternative route. We had the best greeting on arrival that I have had for a long time - such enthusiasm just makes you feel better! The entrance was a little cold and worn but our room was spacious comfortable and warm. Well placed to tour the city and we certainly found it quiet. We decided against breakfast because it was served in the Irish bar which is part of the hotel - this is really our only adverse comment. They need a separate breakfast room cheerfully decorated rather than a gloomy bar - well suited to drinking but not for breakfast. Still I'd not hesitate to go back or to recommend!

We stopped at Hotel Onderbergen in early December. I have to say everything about this hotel exceeded expectations particualry for the price we paid. We originally booked it purely on price (about 75 euro's per night) and the central location, thinking we wouldnt be spending much time in the hotel so it wasnt really important what it was like. So what a great surprise to find the hotel was actually one of the highlights of the trip. The layout of the hotel is quite quirky, rooms arranged over 3 floors around a central courtyard. Our room had a fantastic view over the elegant rooftops of the city, was warm, bed was extremely comfortable, very clean, nice en-suite, and only recently modernised. The hotel main area's are full of original furniture and it feels very grand. The receptionist Kristyna couldnt have been more helpful, directions, maps, local tips, everything was a pleasure.
We drove in from the UK and I was dreading driving around an unfamiliar foriegn city but the hotel was relativley easy to find. One of the best attributes was also the location. Literally 2-3 minutes after stepping outside you're in the heart of the old city, right in the markets, cathedral, main square, bars and restaraunts - BRILLIANT, we didnt have far to stagger home that night. and in the morning the breakfast in the onsite Irish bar was just what the doctor ordered. I highly recommend Hotel Onderbergen and will certainly be going back

Room Tip: The "Full Irish" breakfast is a must have
