“Henri Van de Velde's masterpiece in Gent”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

This is a beautiful building that sets the skyline of Gent. From the tower you get a great view but it's not always accessible. You can get into the library downstairs which is a very enjoyable space. The tower itself needs repair urgently.

“Art Deco Landmark, ready for 2017”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

Ghent is a city full of church towers. But thanks to master architect Henry van de Velde, there's one exception. He designed a tower of wisdom (or science), placed it on top of the Blandijnberg and since the late thirties, it overlooks the university zone and the historical center. The exterior is brutal and rude. Pure concrete with rounded corners. The interior is severe but softened by an abundance of marbles and woods. Not to be visited by those afraid of modernism or late art deco ;-)
When visiting, there was a restoration project going on, but we were still able to see quite a lot of the interior.

“It is just a library”
Reviewed March 20, 2012

The building is tall but not very pretty. Inside is a large library. Not sure what the point is, unless you are doing some research that requires access to those books.

“Neglected”
Reviewed February 8, 2012

Although it's neglected by lack of funds it's still a great landmark created by genious architect Henri Van De Velde.

“Impressive”
Reviewed January 22, 2012

Impressive masterpiece of Henry Van de Velde, de "boekentower" towers over the student quarter of ghent. After restauration it will be possible to visit the "Belvedere" with its magnificent views of the city. The restauration will take several more years though.
