“Charming Hotel in Ghent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

Charme Hotel Hancelot certainly lives up to it's name. It is a charming hotel close enough to the centre of Ghent. A easy 10-15 min stroll will take you to the centre passing interesting attractions on the way. The hosts are very welcoming and the hotel decorated with tasteful period pieces, which adds to the relaxed ambience. Continental style breakfast is of a high standard and the choice excellent. We were given an upgrade to a larger room as we were staying for 3 nights and the room was spacious with old wooden floors (complimentary slippers provided so noisy heels would not disturb guests below), comfortable bed, modern fitted bathroom (which is always appreciated) with a nice shower. My husband and I both recommend a stay at the Hancelot.

Thank you for recommending us. Indeed all our rooms are decorated differently but all with antique furniture. In combination with the high ceilings in our Charm Hotel, the authentic wooden floors, the rich decorated ceilings in the breakfast lounge, the fire places and the cristal chandeliers, it brings you back in time of 1840 when this building was lived in by a barons family. We have tried to keep everything as authentic as possible in combination with the modern comfort of wireless internet, flatscreen TV, modern bathroom in all rooms and facilities like sauna, fitness and free internet corner. In all our rooms we have also put individual packed slippers to avoid as much as possible the sound of walking on wooden floors. The wooden floors are part of the charm and atmosphere and are part of its authenticity. Furthermore very hygienic in comparison with putting carpets in the room. Looking forward to welcome you again

the hotel's position is not convenient to walk to the city centre which is 1km afar. however tram/bus lines connect it to both train stn and downtown (but it is not clear on web). I recommend 1st floor rooms, and 3rd floor is to be avoided. floors are in wood, quite noisy!!
B/F was regular, but with little fantasy and variety, on a fixed basis. It is ideal for couples over 50 (there is a 'still' atmosphere), but it lacks complimentary newspapers, a decent TV, luggage service, a working toaster (mishap!) or eggs made on command...
If in Gent again, I'd test Novotel (very central) or IBIS (central and economic). personnel is very mice, but limited,.. thus many standard services must be forgotten

Room Tip: confermo, evitare il IIIp., meglio il primo, già al secondo si arriva con una stretta scala, e nessu...

Thank you that you have enjoyed the atmosphere and our friendly and personal service. A tip for next time: ask our breakfast lady for toast, she will be happy to make it for you in the kitchen. We do not put a machine or toaster in the breakfast room since sometimes guests forget they have put bread in and it starts smelling in the breakfast room after burnt bread. Indeed it is a continental breakfast buffet with freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee or tea served at the table and then you can make a choice from the buffet with three sorts of cheese, three sorts of salads, home made fruit salad, three sorts of sliced meat, two sorts of jam, honey cake, crackers, chocolate spread, two sorts of yoghurt, honey, four sorts of flakes like muesli and cornflakes, two sorts of sliced bread, cakes with raisins, applecake, luxury sandwiches, croissants, chocolate pastry, etc.....In short: a good and fullfilling way to start your day and explore Ghent. With the historical city centre 10 minutes walking away or take tram 4 at the end of our street and with three stops you are there. Or if you like to stay in the Arts Quarter of the city centre where we are located, visit the by UNESCO listed small Begijnenhof just around the corner, or walk through one of the parks and the musea around it that are located in our area. Or plan an evening of culture in the main theatre Capitole or enjoy a movie in the cinema complex at five minutes walking from the hotel. Lots to do in Ghent so make sure you plan at least two nights!

What a charming hotel. Not much to look at from the outside but once inside its has the most wonderful atmosphere and is loaded with charm and character. We were greeted with a welcome drink and escorted to a wonderful loft room, there are no lifts it this hotel and its a good ten minute walk out of the town centre but it is truly wonderful.

we will definitely be making a return visit.

Room Tip: No lift so be prepared for the stairs. Hotel parking was really cool, your almost in reception!!

Charme hotel Hancelot is a lovely place in the beautiful city of Gand. It's not so close to the centre, but you can reach in 15 minutes by foot all the tourist attractions. The Begijnhof, instead, is really around the corner. The hotel is located in an ancient charming villa: the breakfast (very good and generous) is served in two enchanting rooms with fireplaces. The room we had was at the third floor, cozy and comfortable. The only notes: there are no stairs and the rooms are not very soundproof, but it's all acceptable as it's an old building that however has retained its splendor!

Thank you for your lovely comments. Indeed we are 15 minutes walking from the old historical city centre or you can take tram number 4 at the end of the street: three stops and you are at the Cathedral. You can also rent a bike in the hotel if 15 minutes walking is too far for you. Ghent city centre exists of two areas: the Old Historical City Centre with the Gravensteen Castle and three towers & on the other part the Museum and Art area. We are located in the Museum and Art Area with all the large parks are of the city, the museums like the museum for modern art and the museum for contemporary art, the largest Theater called Capitole just around the corner as well as the by UNESCO protected Small Begijnenhof. Furthermore in this area a visit to the St Pieters Church and Abbey at 5 minutes walking is really worthwhile visiting especially when you do the Alisson tour. Hope we may welcome you again!

Hancelot was the perfect location for my five day stay in Ghent. The building is elegant and comfortable; the staff is charming and helpful; the location is good (tram and bus stop at the end of the block, but on a quiet street); the breakfast was tasty and copious. Easy walk to the historic center. I recommend it very highly. No lift so bit of a climb to the 3rd floor rooms, but it's a historic building.

Thank you for your kind words. I will let our small team know you have enjoyed their personal, attentive and friendly service. That is one of the most important things for us to accomplish: to make you feel at home. We offer the personal service of a B&B in combination with the hotel facilities like reception where we assist you as much as possible in planning your trip in Ghent, a lobby lounge to enjoy a drink, private use of sauna, free use of fitness, large garden with lots of trees and a terrace to enjoy the quietness in the middle of the city centre, free wireless internet throughout the building to keep your friends informed of your nice trip. For your next visit if you think the stairs to the third floor are too long: you might consider to reserve the Charm Deluxe Rooms on the second floor or the Charm Superior on the first floor. Looking forward to welcome you again.

Dear Hosts,

We had a wonderful stay in Ghent and were very satisfied with everything. Of course it was also suitable that our daughter lives nearby, but also the area of Ghent is so close to the city center that it is a nice stroll to get there. We visit about 10 – 15 hotels per year (Slovenia, Europe and North America) and it is the homeliness that we enjoy most. The tea and coffee in the room and the small table to sit down is definitely one thing that makes one feel better. Also the alarm clock by the bed is a small thing, but in hotels one is usually lost about time and searching for a device to show you the correct time. We loved your bathroom, which is well situated in the old room. Also the furniture was well placed and showed the period in time you wished to present. Everything was so clean and the linen a pure white that it made me wish the stay would not end too fast.

We wish you all the best in managing your romantic hotel and many satisfied customers.

Julijana, Slovenia

Room Tip: The rooms are nicely arranged and the furniture is old-fashioned, but well preserved and taken care...

It is so good to read all your nice comments on cleanliness and the nice and stylish décor and furniture. Room tip: only the Charm Deluxe rooms and the Charm Superior rooms feature high ceilings, free use of bathrobes, tea & coffee facilities. The Charm Rooms on the third floor have lower ceilings and do not feature the above mentioned facilities but on the other hand are very cozy and also do have a nice sitting area, antique furniture, toiletries and slippers, free wireless internet, a kettle, safety deposit box, a ventilator, and the choice of soft or hard pillows and large bed of 210 cm long. It was wonderfull to have you with us!
