Owner description: Permanent exhibition: 'From neanderthal to Gallo-Roman' Discover the multifaceted story of man in the Limburg region: from prehistory to the end of the Roman period. Familiarize yourself with the major transition points and marvel at more than 2,000 objects from the museum’s own collection, beautifully presented in a highly-original set by Niek Kortekaas and De Gregorio & Partners. Temporary exhibition: 'Timeless Beauty' This exhibition signals a departure from what you usually expect from the Gallo-Roman Museum. An evocative interplay of images of sensual nakedness by the art photographer Marc Lagrange, intriguing texts by Roman authors and authentic objects leading you deeper into the mysteries of feminine beauty.

Was VERY disapointed. ultra modern and sterile musem. buy a book and you will learn and see more. musem rooms have few things to see for the size and throws in some modern art to show how "up in the times" they are. get real

It was a pouring wet day so we decided this would make an excellent day out and our expectations were high given the previous reviews. Our first stop was the restaurant as it was lunchtime. The food was good, but the service rather slow and we were eager to move on to the museum itself. I found the museum to be rather uninformative for my children, perhaps because a lot of the information was in Dutch. Our own fault for not being multilingual I guess! We did have a book in English explaining the exhibits, but we soon tired of it as it was rather laborious to keep referring to it. There were some fun activities for the children which they enjoyed and the staff were helpful and friendly. I think I was expecting to find out more about Roman life, particularly as my eldest son will be learning about it at school next term. There were plenty of artifacts on display, but no great feel for how they actually lived. Overall, not a bad visit but not as good as anticipated and therefore we were a bit disappointed.

This was a fantastic museum: great content, collection, architecture, style, activities and more. The staff were friendly and multilingual. The displays were also available in four languages (Flemish, French, German and English); the static ones in Flemish could be interpreted with a guide borrowed from the information desk. They had many activities for children, allowing everyone of all ages to have something interesting to do. The displays were the most life-like and highest quality we have seen -- it is almost as if you are walking amongst Neathertals or stepping inside the stable-home of the Gauls! The decor changes on each floor along with the time period displayed. A great introduction to the city, region, and three fascinating periods in history.

The museum is quite well known and has won a prestigious price so expectations were high. The museum is located in a magnificent building in the center of Tongeren. However the museum did not completely meet my expectations. The beginning of the tour is interesting and kept my attention but as I got to the first and second floor I found myself skipping more and more of the explanatory videos...

There is nothing more exciting for a history buff than learning history on location. A visit to Tongeren allows an American like myself to walk in the path of 2000+ years of history. The Gallo-Roman Museum makes that experience so much more meaningful by explaining the early portion of that history in a plain, yet thorough way, so that the enthusiastic layperson can understand. The museum exhibits cover the time period from the earliest hunting-gathering inhabitants of the region through the early farmers and on through the 400 year Roman occupation. A real plus for the foreign visitor is the guidebook that is loaned by the museum that presents the full text of every single museum exhibit sign in the visitor's language. In our case the language was English but they had many other languages available as well. The museum is full of artifacts, but there are many interactive exhibits as well, such as multi-language slide shows and "touch tables" on which visitors can handle a stone axe or feel the texture of an earthenware bowl. There were also several craft experiences available for children. We spent three hours in the museum and learned a lot. We highly recommend this experience.
