We visited during the school holidays with my two nephews, they loved going down the pit, one of them came back with about 1/2 ton of shiney coal in his pockets! Very good value for money, and coal mining needs to be remembered for future generations!

Great museum with lots to do, outside play area, mini steam train and the underground together with a good restaurant for snack or a full meal. Great day out.

Attended the National Mining museum yesterday and boy wasnt i not disapointed , went on the underground tour provided by guide and ex miner Paul Grace . Paul was not only a very knowledgeable and experienced ex miner but a comic , childrens entertainer and one nice guy . He began with the origins of coalmining in victorian times up to when the mines was closed by the tory government , explaining the horrendous working conditions women and children had to endure just to feed themselves , making my working life look a doddle . Paul provided insight into all the mining methods and machinery , Health & Safety aspects and perils faced by each and every miner who went down below

Before i went i was a bit anxious about going down the mine but with Paul's knowledge , confidence and humour my concerns soon faded

There is plenty to do for kids with a mini train taking them around the grounds and play areas , food and staff was excellent and cant recommend it enough for individulas and families , a great place to take school children to educate and preserve all our heritage

We had an extra day to burn in Wakefield and a friend mentioned why not pop down an old coal mine
Wow fantastic ! With a warm welcome from old working miners to a cold visit down the pit ! 140M down to be precise! Its had a feeling like the pit closed yesterday.
Very informal tour from a enthusiasts who is a licensed miner.
Lots to do for a day out and very reasonable priced!

Paul our tour guide with his fantastic Barnsley crack and pit banter brought our underground visit to life. The entire place takes you back to a time of great highs and great struggles to an industry lost but never forgotten. Thanks to the entire team for a wonderful day out.
