“A Good Day Out For The Family”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

We took our 7 year old grandson to this attraction during the half term holiday. I can certainly recommend a visit as there is so much to see and do. Entry and parking is free. There are plenty of picnic areas and outdoor attractions as well as the indoor displays with plenty of hands on things for the children. For an underground tour you need to purchase a token costing £2 per person, which you can either hand back or keep as a souvenir, if you choose to do the latter, the money is put in the maintenance fund. Children under the age of 5 are not allowed underground..

“Definitely worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

Living about 20 miles away we had driven past the signs to the Mining Museum many times but finally got around to going for a few hours today. Very interesting displays and good underground tour. Finished off with toasted teacake and lovely cup of tea in the cafe. Staff friendly and helpful.

Me and husband went there while on a short break in the area. The man who showed us down the mine had a wealth of knowledge and made it all very interesting and brought the history to life! We don't have children yet but definitely Bring our kids there one day!! A great and educational visit!!!

Easily found after following "brown signs" from M1.Plenty of parking.Nice change to go somewhere that doesn't charge the earth, relying on donations to supplement funding.Interesting and interactive for children over the age of 5 yrs. Reasonably priced cafe.

“Visiting Santa underground”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

As a family this was our first visit to the museum. We booked a Santa package a few weeks in advance which included a trip for all 5 of us to go underground and visit Santa, with presents for our 3 children, plus a two course Christmas dinner in the restaurant.
I can't fault anything. The staff were fantastic and friendly, the underground tunnel to Santas grotto was magical and the grotto itself was enchanting. Santa spent a lot of time talking to the children and as we went to see Santa in timed small groups, there was very little waiting or hold ups.
Going underground in an original miners lift was very exciting, wearing our miners helmets and carrying our lamps! We had family photos taken which we weren't obliged to buy but we did as they were so good and reasonably priced.
Our Christmas meal was lovely and all in all made a good start to the Christmas season, (we visited on Sunday December 16th).
We had a good look round the museum itself too which was fascinating. The pit ponies were lovely and the children used the adventure playground.

This was a unique visit to Santas grotto and I will tell everyone how good it was and that they must go next year!!!
