“Good, but wine overpriced”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

We visited the Bij den Borer in a warm late summer Monday evening and overall we had a good experience, although not exceptional. We arrived at about 7.30 without reservation and we took one of the last two or three table available in the small terrace of the restaurant in the place Sainte Catherine. The terrace is composed of approx 8 tables, covered by tension umbrella and fenced with glass and wood. Given the space available the tables are probably to many.
Food is good, well prepared and tasty. Wine, our choice was a Cava, is overpriced (more than 40 Euro) and worth probably less than a forth. Desert also was not exceptional, tarte tatin not cameralized at all.
Try harder because the location is worth on sunny summer evenings.

“Straight in my top 5 places to eat”
Reviewed October 14, 2013 via mobile

I really enjoyed my visit to Bij den Boer with my girlfriend.
It had been recommended to us by a local before we arrived.
We had booked a table about 2 weeks before our trip and it's a good job as it was full by 9.30pm
The food was lovely, the service was good. I loved the ambience.
I had the set menu which was about £30.00 whilst my girlfriend chose from the menu. Wine was a bit pricey but overall £90.00 for a good three courses with wine was good value for the quality.

“"Fresh seafood but Average"”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

Had dinner at this restaurant and the seafood was very fresh. Ordered oysters for starter and truly enjoyed it. However, the main corse (fish) was a bit bland in terms of the taste. Not sure that's the way Belgians usually cooked their fish dishes but just not to my palate. Would still recommend to those visiting Brussels and searching for fresh seafood.

“Come early or book a table”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

We like to eat early. We arrived at 1830, and got the last free table. All the other were reserved. It was a mix of tourists, local residents and foreigners who apparently worked in Brussels. Nice facilities, friendly staff and good food. It was certainly worth the ten minutes walk from the tourist streets around the Grand Place.

“Wonderful fresh fish. Honest brasserie.”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Having contemplated going to one of the high-end fish restaurants, and seen very mixed reviews, we settled on Bij den Boer for dinner and were not disappointed. A friendly and relaxed place, white table cloths but not too fussy. Lots of locals there, who were eating mussels, though we opted for the four course menu at 27.50 euro. It was really excellent - both in terms of quality and value for money. A starter of delicious fish soup with crab meat and white fish in it. I then had some very good king prawns on a skewer, and my friend had excellent oysters (8 euro supplement). Then we both had the best sword fish we had tasted in years. Pudding was tiramisu, but we opted for coffee instead. Would recommend this place extremely highly for good honest brasserie style cooking with the freshest ingredients (a decent short wine list as well.)
