“Convivial but disappointing in terms of food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is a typical Brussels cafe extended into a fairly large eatery. The atmosphere is great but the quality of the food is low. As a local my advice would be not to try this place if you want to have a real taste of Belgian food. Portions are not very large and you feel like you are having some cheap supermarket food in your plate. But it is cheap so it is pretty busy and the service has difficulties in following with orders. The grey shrimp "croquettes" are filled with sauce and contain little actual shrimps. Nothing really "talked" to me so I tried their XXL hamburger, this is just two small hamburgers placed on each other bathing in sauce; not to mention that the meat had a strong taste of spices that did not fit beef at all. If it is just for a drink the place is fine but for food? I don't think so!

“Nice place for quick lunch or dinner”

The one I visit is near to Montgomery ; it is a nice decorated typical brussels brasserie. Simple and fresh food at very reasonable prices. Good portions too.

“Worth visiting!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2012

There are four of them and I visited the one located in Place de l'Altitude Cent. It is a cosy little restaurant with homemade- like couking and excellent prices! I have been there more than once -I happen to stay very close and I had meat balls with tomato sauce, burger, spaghetti bolonnaise and there were all really good! The ration quality- price is excellent! Make a reservation because this place is usually packed!

“Good Belgian Brasserie”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2011

I live in Brussels and dine out regularly.

There are currenly four Schievelavabo restaurants, and this review is for the one near Montgomery Circle on Rue du Collège Saint Michel. The restaurant is easilly accessable by Metro and tram. The restaurant seats 60+ in the main room and has seating downstairs for another 20 or so. The decoration is very local with lots of old advertising metal signs on the walls and various other decorations scattered about. It makes a very inviting and lively atmosphere. The staff is quick and efficient and some speak English. This restaurant is very well known by locals and fills up every night, so reservations are absolutely needed if you plan to show up after 7:30. In the summer or on warm days there is plenty of outdoor seating on the sidewalk.

There is a standard menu as well as a specials board. Many of the items on the standard menu are typical Belgian fare which include various stews and meat dishes which are quite good. They also have burgers and ribs which are ok. Their salads are huge and are very good with lots of variety. Their numerous pasta dishes are also large, but just ok in terms of taste (though lots of people order them so maybe it's me). So standard menu is good. Their specials are also good. One special, the jambonneau (or ham on the bone) is on the specials board every day and is outstanding-in my opinion the best in Brussels. It's highly recommended, though you do have to wait a bit for it (20-30 minutes). They often have a themed plate like a Greek or Spanish plate and usually a pasta special. There are also drink and desert specials.

As I noted, the restaurant is very lively with a great atmosphere. People come here to relax and enjoy themselves with family or friends. The staff are quick and efficient. The bar serves some nice cocktails and great Belgian beer. The wine, both bottled and house are fine. Most portions of food are large even by US standards and are good value for the money. A typical dinner for 2 with wine is about 40-50 euros.

So, if you're looking for that quiet romantic dinner; this isn't it. If you're looking for a good meal at a good price and want to visit a typical corner Belgian Brasserie and sample some Belgian food, then you're in the right place.
