“They will probably accept Yen.”
Reviewed February 23, 2013 via mobile

I have known about this place since 6 years now, Japanese friends living in Brussels introduced us. And you will discover that there is no need to fly to Japan in order to experience the ambiance of a real Japanese brasserie, because that better describes Izaka-Ya compared to a restaurant. Regulars have their own bottle of Sake, with their names on it, and you can become a regular quite quickly as the food and ambiance are so good. Don't expect a squeaky clean environment with linen table cloths, this is more like a brown cafe Japanese style. The waiters and chefs recognise you after a few visits and will be so friendly to your kids that you feel like you are visiting friends. Saturday lunch time is Bento Box time...plenty of tasty food for no price at all. Try the Japanese Pizza and be surprised :), ice cream ? As long as it is green tea, soya or some other Japanese flavour. Once you leave happy and satisfied, don't forget to stop by the Japanese shop next door, it will provide you with all the necessary ingredients for a continuation of your Japanese holiday in Brussels.

“Great discovery.”
Reviewed December 23, 2012

A friend and I enjoyed our meal at the Izaka-Ya during our recent visit to Brussels. It had been recommended to me by a friend of mine and was just what we were expecting. Good Japanese food in a casual, lively restaurant. It's not a Sushi bar, there's no sushi on the menu, but is an excellent place to sample a wide variety of Japanese dishes.
It's a small restaurant, very popular, so it is best to book.
The menu was varied, food was very good, service was friendly and efficient, prices were reasonable. I look forward to a return visit.

“Authentic japanese”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

Simple yet delicate Japanese cuisine. Chefs and most staff are Japanese as well as many of the patrons who attend every night. Having lived in the Far East and travelled to Japan, I find the flavours and cooking methods are very authentic. The various chicken yakitori are quite tasty, although my favourite is the octopus. Also, the fried chicken is delicious. I also recommend the "sashimi de bar".

“"Authentic" Izakaya style no-frills restaurant”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Probably as close as you can get to a Japanese bar/restaurant in Brussels. This place is always busy and full, with many Japanese guests, you better make a reservation!
The menu consists mostly of small Japanese dishes that are served in whatever order when they are ready and are best to be shared. Be careful, this is no sushi bar! You will get great sashimi, yakitori and absolutely fantastic less well known Japanese dishes but no sushi. The natto with squid is to die for! Try also the fried mini fish (“petit poisons frits”), they make a great appetiser.
The prices are excellent for the quality of food you get. Service is quirky and Japanese-style, if you get past the unusualness you will notice their warmth and friendlyness. The décor of this bar is very sober, Japanese style. You can also sit at the bar where you can watch the chefs prepare the dishes. If you want a quiet romantic dinner with your significant other this might not be your best choice (it’s noisy and crowded) but if you want excellent Japanese food for great prices in an energetic authentic atmosphere, this is your place! Best to go with a few friends so you can try out and share a lot of their small dishes.

“Disappointed in the quality of the food, the value for money and the service....”
Reviewed June 8, 2012

I visited this place as I love Japanese food and am trying to visit all of the Japanese restaurants in Brussels. This was one of the first I visited as it has such good recommendations on tripadvisor.

I have eaten sashimi, sushi and hot Japanese dishes in many restaurants in many countries (Luxembourg, Portugal, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, UK, Spain) and have had a pretty wide-ranging experience in this sort of food. Unfortunately I was very disappointed by this restaurant.

Firstly the service was very unfriendly (we had a non-Japanese waiter...) verging on rude... The quality of the food, in general, was acceptable but really not exceptional in any way. The portions were quite small and the prices too high. In short, I will not be back.
