Review for: Saturday night, six course menu.
My mother and I came from London to celebrate her 80th birthday. This was by FAR the most disappointing food we ate in Brussels - and the simply outrageous price would have paid for all the rest, twice over!
My heart sank from the first amuse bouche. Too cold and thus tasteless. I had a horrible feeling, from that moment, that the food would be far from spectacular. I shan't go into detail and bore you. Let me say that I left half my food uneaten and let that be enough.
If I were to sum up my criticism of the kitchen I would say this: it seemed to lack confidence. Or perhaps it has too much? Everything was grossly under-seasoned (and I say that as someone who tries not to eat too much salt, sugar and fat). It was a timid, bland meal. Nothing "exploded" on the tastebuds. Nothing amazed - not even the presentation.
The room itself is small, but charming enough, if you like Art Deco. The seats weren't especially comfortable. The staff were pleasant, if a little supercilious.
All in all, this was the most disappointing high-end restaurant I've ever experienced.
Next day (Sunday) we went for brunch at Fabrique, which, in its unpretentious way, was utterly charming and delicious - and a sixth of the price. Amazingly, we sat next to a couple who'd been in Comme Chez Soi the night before! They agreed with us, that the experience had been far from spectacular. They were French, by the way, not dreadful English, like us.
Sorry, Comme Chez Sois - you need to up your game before you lose another star. In fact, you don't even deserve one. Our local one-star restaurant in London (where we ate only last week) serves far better food, in a far nicer setting.
