“Great location, good price - but is it worth it?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2011

Being the only hotel on Brussel's Grand Place, it has the best position you could find in the whole city. But beware: if they say that the room has a view to the rear, they mean it (and, btw, having the nice panorama doubles the price). Mine was quite small, with only one small window and old furniture - a bit claustrophobic, if you can't stand tiny spaces. Bathroom was alright, with the shower hose fixed high on the wall (something I personally hate) and the ventilation fan missing (but it might be that they had moved it to the top of the pipe, to avoid noise - anyway steam from the shower was taken out from the room).
In any case everything seemed quite clean (although there was no bed cover on the blanket). After a sound, natural (i.e. not alcohol- or drug-induced) night sleep, I could have breakfast (pretty varied) while observing the square on a cloudless morning. Very good service from the helpful reception personnel and a good wi-fi connection, all for a fair price, so I was overall quite satisfied by my stay.
The point is: within a stone's throw there are better value for money hotels (at least, when not booked last minute). So, if you don't mind walking a little bit, you'd better shop around. If, instead, you wish to surprise someone with the location, you certainly are at the right place.
Sleeping in a Unesco World Heritage site can be impressive - if you are sensitive to it, that is.

You know what they say... location, location, location. That is what this hotel has going for it. Beautiful view of the Grand Market and easy walk to great shopping and restaurants. Now for the bad news. The mattress was antique, from the 1600's I believe. The tub/shower was moldy. If you are in the front of the hotel you will need earplugs. There are people (drunks, mainly) yelling all through the night until about 6 am. I know most people aren't there to watch tv, which is a good thing because it didn't work. There is a great restaurant down below called

This hotel has a perfect location. It is relatively cheap and in the best location in the city - right on Grand Place, the main city square. It snowed yesterday and the Place was beautiful. The hotel itself is welcoming and warm. The room I had was up on the top floor with only a roof window, but it was clean, a decent size, comfy bed, quiet and had free internet. In the morning the breakfast was better than I expected, and when asked, the manager produced a excellent espresso coffee. In places it is a little bit tired, the furniture is past its best and the carpets could do with being replaced. However, these are minor comments when placed against the many plus points; location, comfortable, value, warm, free internet. In summary, I would definitely recommend this little hotel.

located directly on brussel's grand place it's an old but cozy place where you can find rooms not so expensive if you choose one without a view to the square. Really friendly and professional staff. The breakfast at downfloor's restaurant is quite nice watching the crowd outside.

For a quick, fun trip to Brussels, the location is perfect. Breakfast was very good. The elevator was the scariest I'd seen in a long time. The room was small, and the furnishings were old but you really can't complain for the price. And, as it was at the back, it was quiet despite the central location.

I booked Hotel Saint Michel last minute after reading MissHK2009's review, having never been to Brussels before and having no idea where to stay. The hotel is just a short tram ride from Brussels Midi (3 stops to Bourse, tram 3), then a short 2-min walk through the smells of Belgian chocolate of Grand Place to the front door. The hotel was easy to find (despite their website's ambiguous directions!) location was absolutely perfect.

The staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. I don't know if this was due to me being a lone traveller, or whether they are just genuinely very friendly people.

The rooms admittedly were odd - the first one I was shown was a back room with the kitchen vent pumping cooking air into the room! The second one, which was the room I stayed in, was larger, had twin beds, TV, very clean shower room, but the windows were skylights in the ceiling rather than windows you can see out of. I also noticed on the back of the door there is a price list for the rooms, and you have to pay almost double for a front facing room with a view! That said, for my purposes the room was perfect. The sheets were clean and the bed very comfortable. I also managed to get an internet rate of 50Euro, which included breakfast.

The walls were a little thin and you could hear people in the street at night time, but then you're in the central square so you can't really expect silence.

If you are looking for a hotel in the middle of everything which is clean and comfortable and a great base for your stay, I would absolutely recommend the Hotel Saint Michel. If you are looking for a hotel to spend more time in rather than just to use as a base, then you may wish to stay somewhere else or pay extra for a room with a view.

I fully intend on returning to Brussels and will do my best to stay at this hotel again. Thanks MissHK2009 for your very helpful review!

I was a walk-in client. I was surprised and happy to have been specially offered a very cheap price Euro45@ for two nights (It's the cheapest hotel in my Paris-Brussels-Luxembourg trip and actually anywhere else I visited in Europe). My room which is small is at the back side and perfectly meets my need as a solo traveller. It's clean. There were enough TV programmes choices and I like it, though didn't understand what's talking in French.

Staff are very nice, friendly and caring. Buffet breakfast is wonderful (see pic). I also dined in the same restaurant. It should be good but as I had mistakenly ordered a rabbit maincourse which I am not used to with the menu in French, I ate little (my travel book wrongfully introduced it as eel!).

It's location is excellent and it will be my first choice in case I come to Brussels again. Belgium people are more friendly, nice, as compared.
