“Nice location, pity about the service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

Nice location in the old part of Brussels, 5 minutes walk from the Grand Place.
Reasonable welcome and the room initially looked OK.
View from the window into the kitchen of an apartment across the very narrow (5 metres) street.
Discovered after opening the window for fresh air that there was no heating in the room. There was a single air vent on the ceiling but no means of controlling the temperature.
Breakfast was fairly nondescript.
I was at a conference all day and got back to the hotel at 6pm to freshen up and change before dinner - to find that the room had not been cleaned!
When I telephoned reception to complain I was told "You only paid for the room, if you want it cleaned you have to pay extra" I have never encountered such an attitude.
Checked out the following morning and went elsewhere for the remainder of my stay.

Definitely NOT recommended if you are staying more than one night and expect the room to be serviced.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else.

This was my 3rd stay at The Alma. It is within 4 minutes walk of Central Station and 5 minutes walk of Le Grand-Place - so convenient par excellence. It is a modern building "in-filled" between more traditional ones. The rooms are well proportioned with everything you would expect in a modern hotel. Exceptionally clean and tidy and if you want peace and quiet, ask for a room at the rear which overlooks a large Courtyard area. The Reception Staff were extremely friendly and produced 2nd pillows when requested - so many continental pillows are very thin indeed - why? We paid about £30 per head per night which, for the centre of Brussels, is amazing value. Breakfast is not included and comes in at 12e. I indulged on my last morning as my room mate didn't get in until about 0300! There was an excellent choice of the usual cold items. The hot plate was very tasty and had ravioli, lovely sausages and baked beans - unfortunately, nothing like hot enough, especially when loaded onto a cold plate. The eggs were DIY and difficult to get right - mine ended up hard boiled, not soft. Would I recommend The Alma - unreservedly! I have noted some adverse comments about the Staff - I always start off friendly and chatty - then that is what I get back - friendly and chatty. Works everytime.

Room Tip: We had Room 403 for the 2nd time - nice & quiet facing a rear courtyard.

Brilliant location central to everything 5 minute walk to Central Brussels train station and the Grand Place and restaurants and city center. Basic room, tv and bathroom, did the job. No tea/coffee making facilities though. Service at reception was unbelievably rude and unhelpful, very disappointing service. We were thrown our key, told to pay cash straight away and no help when asking for directions. When asking where to buy tickets for the sightseeing tour we got grunts to walk 'straight on. then right' ? So don't expect a friendly helpful reception. We also encountered some disapproval at us borrowing a two pin plug to charge our phones (which we took back prompty after). Would be good if the hotel would employ better more helpful staff that could help visitors to the hotel, with directions and helpful info. Luckily we did research before we came and so managed fine. Other than that we had a brilliant time in Brussels, a lovely city to visit!!

The board in reception said 250euros on the night we were staying... Definately not worth that!! But well worth the £40 trivago.com price.

Room was a little dark and staff unfriendly but cleanliness and location made up for it!

1 min from grand place
1 min from central station (day trip to Bruges is worth every penny!)
Cheap pizza or takeaway just outside or round the corner from nice restaurants of all varieties.
Waffles everywhere :)

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION

Room was cleaned everyday.
Asked for extra pillows - no problem.

Nice sized room and good hotel!

I had a wonderfull stay there the first time around got a quiet room on the 5th floor. Second time on the first not so pleasant. It can be noisy on weekends because it is so close to the restaurants in the pedestrian area. 5 min from the Grand Place and the Grand Central Station (Train and subways). It took me half an hour to get there from the airport by train (8 euros). Super convenient. Apart from the less than welcoming check in (second time around). it is a great location, of great value (booked on the internet that is), clean confortable and spacious room. You can walk to the museums in 10 -15 minutes.
Will go back there.

Room Tip: Top floors !!!!

We arrived early on a 9am TGV, but were warmly greeted and allowed to leave our bags at the front in order to explore the city while we waited to check in. The lady at the front desk was extremely helpful in assisting us in finding the brewery we were looking for that was not on our map. We had made room requests based on suggestions from fellow tripadvisor followers and all requests were granted. The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was large, and the view away from the street was quiet at night to sleep. Location is excellent, a few minutes walk from Central station and approximately one minute from Grand Place. Perfect location. The only thing we didn't enjoy was leaving our key at the desk whenever we left. Doesn't seem secure in as far as anyone could walk in and ask for a key. However, this has been standard practice at other European hotels we have visited and have not had any issues with the policy.

Room Tip: Recommend room 202. Comfortable double bed, large bath, room away from the street to avoid noise at...

We had travelled by the TVG train from Paris and on arrival at Brussels Midi Station got a taxi to the Alma Hotel.. Unfortunately it happened to be a holiday on this Sunday and the streets around the hotel was barricaded off for the entertainment so the Taxi only got as close as a block from the hotel , from there we had to walk with our luggage on the cobbled road.
The Hotel is a Tourist Class Hotel ,. The room - 403-was a good size with a TV , the ensuite was larger than other hotels we have stayed in ---. No tea or coffee facilities --- comfortable.for the overnight stop The room was at the back of the hotel so we did not get noise from the Grand Place .The Buffet Breakfast was basic but enough food to start the day.
The Hotel is a hop, step & jump from the Grand Place , so convenient, were able to walk to all the free entertainment and shops . My big surprise was I can buy the same Belgium Chocolates cheaper in Australia than I could around the Grand Place, We eat in the small cafe's in the streets off the Grand Place and enjoyed our stay. I would stay at the Alma again if I had a room (as we had) at the back away from the noise.
On leaving we found there was no taxi near by so we walked to the other side of the Grand Place , got in a taxi facing the direction of the hotel and asked the driver to take us to collect
our cases on the way to Brussels Midi which was no problem.

Room Tip: A room at the rear of the hotel .
