Jacques Brel Youth Hostel

We arrived very early to this hostel as we had an early train from Paris. The staff here were very nice and helpful. Even though we couldn't get into our room until 3pm, they offer luggage storage that has CCTV. They have a beautiful courtyard to sit in with a fountain and comfortable reclining chairs. The hostel also has their own bar which opens at 5pm and serves delicious Belgian beers and food. The bartender was incredibly friendly and made a 'night in' at the hostel fun by blaring music, introducing travellers, and suggesting beers. The rooms were comfortable, light and airy. Each bed has its own reading light, which is nice so the people in your room don't keep you up. The breakfasts are free and have a lot to offer. Fantastic bread and cheese! The only reason I didn't give this Hostel 5 stars is due to the distance from the city centre (although trams/metro are easily accessible), but the walk uphill after a night of drinking can be a bit tiring. The bathrooms could have been a bit cleaner as well. But that's really nitpicking....I would definitely suggest this place to anyone travelling to Brussels!

Room Tip: The second floor offers a nice communal deck that overlooks the courtyard.

My friend and I stayed in 6 bed dorm in this hostel for three nights and even though we had some crazy people in our room, we still enjoyed our stay. The staff at the front desk is super nice and helpful, and so is the bartender. The rooms are comfortable and clean enough. There was a shower in the room, which was a nice plus. The location is excellent, everything can be reached by walking. The Wifi worked very well for me and there were also free Internet terminals in the lobby. The only downside for me about this hostel is that the Wifi only works in the lobby, which is, in my opinion, not very comfortable. But despite that, I would recommend staying at this hostel to everyone. I would certainly return there if I were to be in Brussels again.

tayed here for one night after a concert at the Botanics. It did the job but the walls in the dorm seemed to have old blood on them and there were some very questionable white stains on the curtains. Despite that, the rest of the place was clean enough. The breakfast was tasty with a wide variety, the Staff were lovely and helpful and the location was fine for me.

Room Tip: Bring padlocks if you want to leave anything once you have checked out.

Stayed there for five nights -didn't book ahead so changed rooms every day-ask for a room on the side with the elevator. The locations pretty good 5-10 minute walk downhill into the city with good metro links. The breakfast -which is free- was nice also. Be warned can't check in till 3 PM but check out by noon. Friendly staff, good atmosphere.

I lived here for 3 months as a volunteer intern and loved it. Internet access often crapped out, but wifi was still available if you had a laptop( ground floor, best spots for connection are beside the computers, in the bar, and if you go to the back lounge area, the far far corner gives you another wifi access that is not the hotels, but signal is strong :P Also, there is a plug there.

Many people complained about the self serve kitchen being closed, however that was because it was only open between certain hours in the evening, info at front desk :)

The breakfast food was always pretty good and the kitchen lady is much into Bio/organic food and tried to have in to serve as much as possible.

From the 3 months I spent there, it was great, rooms where cleaned daily, food was fresh, most of the staff was very nice, sometimes it got really loud, but that cant be helped when a group of 50 teenagers are spending the night there!
Location is pretty good, close to everything, however I wouldnt recommend walking around late at night alone. Anywhere in Brussels really. And keep an eye out for pickpockets as with anywhere else.
I would stay there if travelling there again.

This hostel is great on so many levels. The rooms are fantastic and clean, and the location is good (being only a 5 minute walk to the nearest metro station). Unfortunately there is little beyond the basics. For example, there is usually only one person on reception which makes checking in a very, very slow process. The self-catering kitchen is apparently closed, without explanation or apology. There is no really lounge area, except for the bar which is only open from 7pm-10pm. The 'menu' consists of only 3 meals, of which only 1 is available - again, without explanation. The wifi is free, but unusable.

This hostel is great for those who need a room, and nothing more. If you are used to hostels with good services and a more social feel there maybe better hostels elsewhere in Brussels.
