“Great area to stay while in Brussels”

Place Ste. Catherine

I've stayed in the St. Catherine district when visiting in Brussels several times now. I like the fact that it's on a Metro line, although it's only a short walk to Grand Place. There are several small hotels and B&B's nearby that make it relatively affordable for a tighter budget. Of course there's a large selection of excellent fish/seafood restaurants but many other types of food available as well. Add to that a great small chocolate shop (Blondel) and places for beer, bread and pastries make it an excellent home base for anyone visiting in Brussels.

Go there if you are looking for a place to have lunch on a sunny spring day. No crouds, no noise - just sunshine, fountains and tasty seafood with wine (although very close to the touristic routes)

Love the fish restaurants around the long "canal-like" place. My favourite is the Hutriere and my favourite there are the moules! Can be noisy at times though...

We visited Brussels in late November, not the best time of year. Place St.Catherine proved to be a must. The Christmas fair was being prepared, same as in many other places of the city, which actually spoiled the whole image with the scaffoldings, without the glamour that follows. However, Place St.Catherine was still charming, with its long and airy space and beautiful façades. It is correct to say that some of the Seafood restaurants are not always the best and are tourist-focused. However, we did our research beforehand (Trip Advisor included) and our choice was excellent, as you can see in my review of the restaurant. The church is very interesting and there are some beautiful shops around and a market-place-ambience (however low tone) in the greater area that make the Place a worthwhile attraction in Brussels, and an original one.

This is unfortunately one of those places that were in vogue once upon a time and the restaurants (mainly seafood) charge high prices for limited veriety... Today the food quality has gone and tourists are the intended "victims"
