“Comforting”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Decent comforting if slightly stodgy bar food; low ceiling give the bar area a slightly conspiratorial air! But the basics are all there - staff usually Irish, service usually OK though understandably a bit pressed in the busy periods, and the standard array of beers with nothing too exotic.

Avoid the upstairs meeting room though - the acoustics are terrible!

“Decent food, bad service”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

The service you'll get here is fairly standard for Brussels bars / resturaunts in my experience. Expect disinterested (presumably badly paid) staff with miserable faces, habitually looking as if they wish they were some place far far away.

I see a previous reviewer described this as a 'typical Irish pub'. Perhaps it's typical of an Irish themed pub in some other country, but it's not typical of a pub here in Ireland by ANY stretch of the imagination. So if you wander into the Old Oak in search of the famous Irish 'Cead Mile Failte' you're in for a disappointment. The only Irish things about this place are the Guinness and the Expats who go there because they serve it.

Food was hearty pub-grub which I enjoyed, (though I was starving). Atmosphere was good (Friday evening). Guinness was good by continental standards.

Service consistently brutal. Expect to have to keep walking to the bar to ask them to bring down the drinks you ordered etc. Miserable faces - you'd feel bad asking them for anything.

“Typical irish pub”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

Cool place to hang out with friends and enjoy a good Irish beer. There is noisy, crowded and fun. From time to time there are small concerts and someone plays classical pieces on guitar. The service is laid back and fine. We ordered chicken wings and they were ok, well done. The Old Oak is a good place to come with friends and spend a good evening.
