“Along the Silk Road in Belgium”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

I admit, when the taxi stops outside the place it doesn't look that promising, unless you're hoping for a drug deal or a girl for the night. Except the square is full of very expensive (and extremely over-priced and over-rated seafood restaurants.) But the staff are very friendly and once you've found your way up the narrow stairs to the room, it's a delight. We stayed in the Silk Road suite, and our stay was exceptional. Every room has a different theme - and it makes the stay truly memorable. The breakfast was good, there's 24/7 coffee and the staff at the front desk were very helpful and friendly. We loved it.

Room Tip: If you can stretch to the Silk Road, do it. It's a trip.

We just spent a week in the Congo room at the Hotel Welcome. I don't think there is a better hotel in the city of Brussels. Staying off the main street in St. Catherine square is perfect location, only minutes to the Grand Plaza but so quiet at night.
The room is very comfortable and getting to spend time in Africa was fun.
The breakfast is included always fresh and nice. The staff is better than fantastic. Perfect is all I can say.

Room Tip: I'd suggest Silk Road for those who need extra room. For those who don't mind a smaller room...

My husband and I stayed at the Welcome Hotel for two nights in August of 2012 during a short trip to Brussels. While this hotel was nothing fancy, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to stay somewhere memorable for a decent price.

The hotel is located in Brussels' Place Sainte Catherine, the former fish mongering district turned into a charming neighborhood with plenty of restaurants to choose from. At first glance it seems to be far from the city's historic district - which it is, relatively, but Brussels is very small! - but there is a metro stop (Sainte Catherine) directly across from the hotel in the square and the walking enthusiast can easily go by foot to the Grand Place or the Mannekin Pis in under 15 minutes. Alternatively, those with European debit cards (NOTE - the kind with a "chip" in them) can rent bicycles from many different locations near the hotel. Overall I think we enjoyed being slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown traffic while still being within walking distance of the sites and great restaurants. (By the way, we had a great meal of carbonade flamande at La Villette bistro - just a block away from the hotel)

As for the hotel itself, it was evident to us that this was a former hostel with a major cosmetic facelift. There is nothing overtly elegant about the entry way or the breakfast room, but the space is serviceable and the staff enthusiastic. The rooms are very small (especially the standard rooms) but the attention to detail in the decoration made it very comfortable. The bathroom in particular in our room (the Kenya Standard Room) looked very chic and updated. Aside from the small size my only other complaint about the room was that the standard rooms do not come equipped with air conditioning. Thankfully we knew this before arriving and the August weather was still pretty pleasant. In addition, the room was equipped with several fans. As the balcony windows did not have a screen, however, I might worry about mosquitos in other times of the year.

The major disappointment of this overall good hotel was the breakfast buffet. I expected breakfast to be different in Brussels than in the U.S., but the bacon floating in a vat of grease and the watered-down juice cocktails were simply unappetizing to us. If all you're after is some Nescafe and a pastry, you won't even notice. (To make up for the lacking breakfast, however, one interesting point in the hotel's favor is the vending machine in the hallway that dispenses cans of cold Belgian beer!)

Overall I think this would be a great hotel for travelers looking for a good value without sacrificing style and basic comfort. I would recommend this especially to families with children, who will love the theme rooms.

Room Tip: Be aware that Standard Rooms do not have air conditioning.

Stayed here for 2 nights last weekend. To sum up: great location, friendly and helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere, good breakfast, and the room was fun, clean and comfortable. We'd definitely stay here again!

So, if you're going to Brussels on a city break (quite unusual...), this is perfect. Even for business, it's close enough to the main stations and the EC area. I personally love the Sainte Catherine area, can't get any better in Brussels. The hotel is comfortable, service is great, but you must be prepared for the room decor, as they take quite seriously the thematic mood: every room is decorated according to an exotic country, to every detail. I stayed in the India room - very romantic. So... more suitable for a romantic getaway than a business trip, still, can't complain on a bit of originality. Truly friendly staff, only one down side: the breakfast is spartan to say the least. I'm not fussy, but must say it was not quite up to par. Will return for sure, but must be prepared for a "different" experience. Well, having all those great seafood restaurants just outside the door is quite worth it.

Welcome Hotel, although not big on luxury, has character in spades. It is charming, quirky and quite unique and if you stay here you're guaranteed to remember it! All of the items in the themed rooms were collected on the owner's trips abroad and the attention that he lavished on the place is very evident, it's like staying inside someone's imagination! We stayed in India and, yes, items in the the room looked a little worn and you can hear noises from the hallway but if you would rather stay away from the soulles little boxes in chain hotels and want something a bit different then you can't do better, I would stay again - in a heartbeat!
