“Good location and cheap, but nothing special”
Reviewed September 12, 2010

Pros: The Hotel A La Grande Cloche was conveniently located, being only 10 minutes' walk from the centre, and with a Metro station very close by as well, making it easy to reach the main rail stations for trips outside Brussels. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and all spoke English. Both the room and the ensuite bathroom were a good size. There was a safe in the room, and this was free to use. This hotel also had the cheapest room rate I could find for a centrally-located hotel.

Cons: There was no aircon, so to avoid being too hot at night it was necessary to leave the window open, but that meant being disturbed by noise from the street below. (As far as I could tell, given that the hotel stands on the corner of a block, almost all rooms overlook the street.) The shower was not thermostatically controlled, so the temperature always fluctuated irregularly between comfortable, boiling hot and freezing cold, meaning that having a shower took at least twice as long as it needed to. The bed was too soft - it was like bouncing around on a children's inflatable castle. There were only 2 mains outlets in the room, both situated so close to the desk surface that it was difficult to plug anything into them.

Tip: Just across the street from the hotel is the Houtsiplou restaurant - we enjoyed it so much the first time we went back again the next day. (See my review of Houtsiplou here on TripAdvisor.)

Summary: As far as I'm concerned, a fundamental requirement at any hotel is being able to get a good night's sleep. I also expect things such as a thermostatic shower and adequate usable mains outlets to be there as standard. Sure, the room rate was cheap for a centrally-located hotel, but given my list of 'Cons' I'd only stay at this hotel again if it were a short stay and I was also desperate to keep the cost down.

This hotel is located 2km from Gare du Midi train station. Unfortunately when we arrived it was raining heavily so we took a taxi to the hotel which cost €13; when leaving we walked to the train station which took about 20 minutes to walk with luggage. A sign at the hotel reception indicated that a taxi to the airport would be approximately €40. It is a short walk to Grande Place and the main tourist area.

Check-in is at 2pm - we were a bit early and were told to leave our bags in the reception area. There were some chairs and internet terminals here for €1 for 15 minutes (or there is free WIFI in the rooms). There is a breakfast room offering breakfast for €8, but we found there were plenty of cafes offering a cheap breakfast nearby.

Our room was spacious and had a very large ensuite bathroom with WC and a shower/bath. The TV in the room seemed to get poor reception as it would frequently change channels by itself or switch off which was very frustrating. The room was warm and stuffy - there was no air conditioning but you could open the windows and a pedestal fan was provided. At times the hotel was noisy. Overall this hotel was good value for money.

We stayed one night and were very pleased. The breakfast was excellent, the room attractive and clean, the location within walking distance from rail station AND the Grand Place. We had a double room with bath in hall (never a wait, always clean) for 67 Euros (usually the price for a single room.) The hotel had understood only one person was in our party ( a misunderstanding between us - their confirmation DID say 1 person but I failed to notice) but when 2 of us arrived, the staff person managed to find us a double room. I assumed that we would have to pay the rate on the door of the double room which was more than 67 E, but when we checked out he charged us only the 67, which I thought very nice & generous. The only thing that bothered us was a bit of street noise that night, but we're country folks and not used to city noises! We definitely recommend this hotel.

This hotel is in an ideal location only 15 min walk from the train station. When walking from midi train station we were a bit concerned as we were walking through an area that looked quite seedy (we would not walk there at night) but were happy when we reached the hotel as it was well presented and appeared to be a nice area. It is surrounded by shops and restaurants, a post office is a few mins away, La Grande Place and the main tourist area only a 10 min walk away. We walked everywhere.

The hotel had a nice appearance and our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. We had chosen to have a room which did not have a toilet in order to keep costs down, and were initially concerned to see only one toilet on our floor but it turned out that only two rooms had to make use of it and at no time was it ever occupied when I needed it. Our room did have a shower room with basin which was very spacious, having a stool where a toilet could have fitted, but its absence meant we got the room for the bargain price of €60 a night.

The room was light and airy, having 3 large windows, which were much appreciated in order to get a breeze in the hot weather (also a fan was provided). We had a lovely view which overlooked the main street - did not experience any noise or trouble sleeping. The room had free wifi and a tv that included BBC1 and BBC2 so we had English speaking tv programmes.

Reception staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was served in a vey pleasant dining room and was a mixture of self service and waitress service. It was the usual continental style breakfast and we stocked up on toast, rolls, croissants, boiled eggs, cheese, yoghurts and juices (avoiding the sliced meats as we are vegetarian). Apart from cornflakes the cereals were coated in sugar or chocolate. It was good value for money - they do have a strict rule about not removing food from the dining room, obviously to avoid people stocking up for a free lunch.

We were very happy with our stay and would stay again. The only thing that did not make it perfect was not having our own toilet but we knew that before we arrived, and having a shower in the room was he most important thing.

Hotel a la Grande Cloche was a fantastic budget hotel. The rooms were clean and tidy. I paid the 1 euro extra to get a toilet in my single room. Well worth the extra $$. This hotel does have a lift, so no trudging up the stairs. The breakfast had a good selection of foods to chose from. The hours of the breakfast were 7-10 or 11 so even early risers were able to be served. the hotel is a very quick 10 minute walk to the Manaquin Pis, Grand Place and Central Station. The wireless internet worked very well.
The hotel is equidistant to Central Station and Midi Station. I would strongly advise to use Central Station for all of your transportation. The walk between Midi station and the hotel is quite seedy. The front desk gentleman indicated that it was an unsafe walk when i asked him about it. Even though you can basically see MidiStation from the hotel, i would advise walking back up to the touristy area to Central Station. Also, the area between Midi Station and the Hotel is a highly Muslim populated area. There are many cafes and coffee shops I passed by that were only servicing men. I only mention because as a female traveling alone, if I had popped in to one and not noticed the clientelle, it could have been uncomfortable for me.

This is a great little hotel in place rouppe, directly in between the bruxxeles-midi train station and the Grand Place center square. Easy to find and easy to checkin, the staff spoke English and even set up a wake up call. I recommend the small single bed room which has your own huge bathroom. Has great free wifi, nice hot shower, and radiated heating. I couldnt really ask for more for such a good price. If you come from the train station just walk out to fzazny and then turn to rue midi where the big horn is and just walk straight and you will see the huge sign for the hotel at the roundabout. Great stay.
