We were only staying for 1 night in Brussels before departing the country via the airport so were looking for a simple hotel on the north side of the city. This met all the requirements and had all the basic elements - bed, shower, toilet, TV.

We had booked through Hotels.com therefore we stumbled at the automatic checkin because we didn't have a code (presumably emailed to you when you book directly through the hotel). Without prompting, a friendly male staff member appeared and checked our booking then returned within 30 seconds with an appropriate code for us to use, so it was not a problem.

We did not use the vending machines for breakfast, instead going to the shopping centre for supplies. Walk out the front door, turn right to the next intersection (20m) then turn right and walk to the next street (80m) and there's the shopping centre right in front of you. It has a food court including a bakery/patisserie as well as Carrefour supermarket with a bakery section so there's two places to buy croissants. I think it opened at 9am though, so that could be a problem for early departures.

The TV in the hotel room offers about 12 channels by default but if you want either of the English language channels (BBC World News or CNN) then you must pay extra for that. You can buy a card in the vending machines for 10 EUR which gives you 24 hours internet + premium TV channels so if you're going to buy wifi internet access for 5 EUR anyway, it's only another 5 EUR. It's still cheaper than paying for other hotels in the area, I suspect.

You could opt to pay 3.50 EUR to get wifi internet in the common breakfast area on the 1st floor if you didn't need it in your room. However, if you just want short term internet, it could also be worth walking around the corner (on the way to the shopping centre) to a mobile phone store which offered internet for 1.5 EUR per hour (+0.30 EUR per page printing).

Walking down from Gare Noord, you'll walk past about 7-8 porn shops in a row in the block before the hotel. It seems a bit seedy to look at but we felt entirely safe, and there are many other hotels in the area so there's a few travellers moving around at all times with luggage, etc. It's only 30 seconds walk to the nearest subway station therefore 1.80 EUR will get you to the Bourse station in <10 minutes.

We did not use the lockers and didn't think much of them - they were only light cupboards with simple locks and one of the doors was broken on a large locker so I'd not trust leaving my bags there for the day.

For a simple, no frills room though, it is ideal.

I stayed here one night but was very impressed. It does what it says: no meals and an automated check-in (and when I had problems with that, a member of staff immediately came out to help), but the room was very clean and comfortable. The vending machines are there if you want food, but the location is central, there are plenty of restaurants down Blvd. Adolphe Max if you walk towards and into place de Brouckere, and on Nieuwstraat whic runs parallel there is a Carrefour supermarket inside the shopping centre (City 2). On another occasion when I needed to ask staff for help, they were very helpful again. Internet worked fine. No downsides!

Hotel Max has comfortable beds, clean rooms and great showers. OK, so breakfast isn't included (there are vending machines on the first floor with fresh pastries, yoghurts, juice, hot drinks) and check in/out is automatic (but there was someone available to help if you get stuck). As far as we were concerned, we weren't paying for facilities we didn't really want or need anyway, which makes Hotel Max great value.
The hotel is in a good location to walk around the city and for the shops and is near a Metro station. The road noise might not be liked by some people but it is in a city, so what do you expect. Recommend visiting the Atomium and the Museum of Music.

MaxHotel exists as a result of the net. Everything is automated, checkin at the panel on the door, minimal supplies in the room (necessities can be purchased from a vending machine). If you are in a rush and just need a place to crash, then this might suffice. But you get absolutely nothing else, no frills. My room was clean, and the assistant at the front was polite and helpful, as the checkin/checkout is somewhat confusing. 5 to 10 minute walk from North station, convenient to the mall, and around a 15-20 minute walk to central station.

Location - near to Rogier metro, and some of the famous tourist attractions, and a shopping mall as well..

Price : Booked online and didnt know that they will charged extra for the taxes....checked in via the machine on the door, but it need booking no (need to get it from them as we've booked via another website), passport and credit card with a pin number. (inconvenient for those country credit card didnt use pin no)

Room : We booked a double room, everything is fine, even the size of the room and the toilet....but there's only 1 power point for the entire room.. my friend and i have to take turn to charge our laptop/camera..

Facilities : Wifi for Euro5 per day. Other stuff are on sale on their vending machine, like toiletries, food, drink..

And if you wanna save more, you can opt not to have room cleaning everyday.. (go directly to their website to book and not via some other sites (like booking.com) coz they've included cleaning of the room daily)

Another complain is, we booked a taxi from the reception to the airport and told them which airport we wanted to go..the taxi came and brought us to the wrong airport.. and to travel to our designated airport, we've to get another taxi and it cost us Euro150 as the airport is 70km away.. luckily we were out early, if not we will missed our flight.!!!
