Hotel Metropole
Ranked #71 of 199 Hotels in Brussels
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Rooms are dramatically outdated, bathrooms poorly equipped.
Air condition did not work but my complaint was siply ignored the first day. On the second day they promised to repair. However, no improvement. Another complaint led to the information that the aircondition failed in the whole hotel and nothing could be done. Discussing the issue the next morning, the rude receptionist explained that the Hotel was perfectly finy and it was simly me being too stupid to control the air condition.

A horrible noise coming from a contruction area across the road prevented any sleep after 7am. Justification by the reception was 'we are in the city centre, we cannot control construction areas'.

No discount, no appoligy, no idea, not even a 'good bye' when leaving...

Room Tip: Ask for quiet rooms

We had a great room but the hotel lacked a few amenities a hotel in that price range should provide. 1) a business center. We had purposely not lugged our laptops with us or cell phones and wanted to email family back in the states, etc. They said the 'business center' was not working, couldn't connect to the internet. What was referred to as a business center was a lone computer around the corner from the front desk. I bet the front desk could connect to the internet so I'm not sure why they didn't want us to use it. 2) They provided free in-room movies (not porn). We couldn't get the movies to work and called the front desk. They sent up 'tech support' which I'm sure was some unlucky employee who had little if any technical knowledge. He couldn't get it to work but said he'd 'do something' downstairs that would fix it. He left and returned and we still couldn't get movies. We would've gone to the cinema across the street but it was too late. When we started changing channels we realized we now had free porn, which was not what we wanted to watch! I guess when he 'did something' downstairs it gave us free porn but no free regular movies. How can you get one but not be able to access the other??
Other than that - Good location, great breakfasts (champagne with your brunch, anyone? Yes, I think I will!), spacious guest room.

Our server in the hotel bar was so nice and accommodating. beautiful pianist. Rooms were nice. Our family stayed in two rooms, 300 had a nice large bathroom. Room 304 was said to be renovated, but there was cracked tile and mold in the bathroom. The thermostat dial turned in a circle, so we didn't know if we were cooling or heating. However we had a beautiful balcony
and view.
Loved the complimentary drinks in the mini bar.
Great location.

If you like bland corporate hotels don't come here. The decor in the public areas is stunning and the atmosphere calm and unrushed. Our room was very spacious and it was what is classed as a superior room.Yes some of the paint was a bit chipped around the door frames and the decor may not be to everyones taste but the bed was very comfortable the tv worked there was a fridge writing desk etc.The bathroom was superb very deco in style huge deep tub and sink.Everything spotlessly clean. All the staff that I encountered were charming and couldnt have been more helpful. Our breakfast was included in the room price and was great no faults at all.Would I recommend this?Yes...unless you like the certainty of every bedroom being exactly the same as the picture in the brochure.Good location too we came back late in the evening and Ididnt think the area was seedy or dodgy.

The positives: the superior room was spacious; had been renovated to an extent; was very quiet (except for one night when the neighbouring room came back and couldn't resist more drinks at 12.30 but one phone call to reception put them to bed); great quality towels and bathrobes; beds lovely, large and soft; is a very classy reception area; had very friendly and efficient reception staff. Deals usually mean it is around 100 euro for a standard room.

The location is around 10-15 minutes walk to Central Station.

The negatives: renovation went only so far and the old furniture is still there & when 2 (out of 4) drawers are so careworn that when opened they also bring the drawer below open...; our bathroom layout is a little weird as the towel rack is on the opposite side of the room to the shower and is also right next to the toilet (which was also inconvenient); the magnifying mirror is two foot away from the sink so no use to wet shavers.

Oh and to the staff (except for reception) we were non-existent. Not one of the suits hovering in the corridor nor the doormen ever said "bonjour", opened a door or even acknowledged our presence. Of course, we were decently dressed but not well-heeled (nor French perhaps) enough to be acknowledged. We have stayed in several 5* hotels before but never had such treatment.

I would not recommend this hotel.

I have always wanted to stay at the Metropole, after enjoying countless visits to the bar and dining once at their lovely restaurant. I love the overall style of the hotel, but I think I was expecting too much of the room and it didn't live up to the rest of the hotel. Don't get me wrong, the room was very comfortable, but I have stayed in better. The breakfast was good, but my cup of tea was awful! Next time, I'll stay where they serve a proper brew.

We loved this hotel and our room! Definitely ask for a renovated room - if you have to wait, it'll be worth it. Our room was beautiful, large, quiet, spotless with a comfortable bed and pillows. We were off the street so it was peaceful sleeping. The lobby was gorgeous and the staff polite and helpful. There is a small refrigerator in the room where, each day, there are two complimentary beers, cokes and water. How nice after a long day. The location is great. The metro is practically right out the door. Short walk to nice restaurants. We stayed at the Metropole for four nights and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 536. Beautifully renovated, quiet and comfortable.
