“Wonderful art deco in the bar, tired and battered bedrooms”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

We stayed in the Metropole for two nights and loved the location for the old town and the wonderful art deco in the public areas and the bar/cafe. Service at reception was friendly, helpful and responsive.

Our bedroom was large and quiet (100% marks there) but battered around the edges and fixtures and fittings in the bathroom required repair. The toilet was cracked, the enamel on the tub worn out and the light over the washbasin didn't work. Plus there was no Internet connectivity in the rooms and the fitness room was a clearly an afterthought installed just so the hotel could get a check mark that it had one.

A great place for atmosphere but clearly suffering from a too-skinny maintenance budget.

This is a curious one to review. Loads that's good and quite a bit that's not so good. To start on the positives: the hotel has a wonderful, original Beaux Arts Lobby and cafe, with large areas of marble, gilt and mirrors. The lift is like something out of a film-set, with gates and cage-like cabin. Staff are efficient without being too friendly or too cold. The location is very good for sightseeing. Accommodation prices are very good if you get a deal. Breakfast room and buffet are excellent. Free (limited) mini-bar!
Sadly, the not so positive: the area is ok but can attract a few drunks at night, who seem to congregate nearby (outside a Fried Chicken takeaway). It seems that the district has deteriorated around the hotel, rather than the hotel being built in a dodgy neighbourhood. Our room was large with a huge bathroom and comfortable bed, but the decor really needs bringing into the 21st century. We had just one, narrow window overlooking an inner well which wasn't the most attractive, but at least it was quiet. The cafe prices were quite high, but you're paying for the ambience. There was a lot of maintenance work going on in the lounge, with scaffolding, which was a shame and the 'Gourmet' restaurant was closed for the Summer break.
Basically, to enjoy it to the full, ensure that you turn left out the front of the hotel to go to all the sights. A further right turn after about 100 metres and you'll be in the charming area around St Katherines Church, with some very good fish restaurants.
Turn right out of the hotel and it starts getting a bit seedy.
In conclusion, I would recommend the hotel for its history and grandeur, but there are more comfortable options available in Brussels.

Room Tip: Higher rooms for peace and quiet

I have stayed In this hotel a number of times over the last 20 years and I really like it - first of all because of the closeness to the City center and the Metro and for it's lovely decor In the lobby area and bar - some rooms are renovated - others not, so the comford depends on which room you get - it can be somewhat cold in some of the rooms during winter - breakfast is great!

If you do not have much in the way of expectations then you will likely be satisfied with the Metropole Hotel, which is conveniently located in central Brussels, just a few minutes walk (5 to 7) from the main square of Brussels. However, if your expectations are salient then you had better go elsewhere, perhaps even a differnt city. Okay, I'm writing this a bit tongue in cheek so to put things in perspective let's first have a look at Brussels: Brussels is typically known for being the centre of the EU government and yet ironically the country has had no government to speak of for longer than any other country of which I am aware . Steamed muscles and frites (french fries) as well as Belgium chocolate and beer also top the list but yet when I came here, at least before I arrived, I had the expectation that the city would have a Swiss flavour, well- organized and clean but this is far from the case. In my view the city here has a well-worn look and feel to the point of being a tad seedy - the sidewalks are in deperate need of repair and yet the government, which does not exist anyway, does little to recitfy this, perhaps it does not have sufficient funds or the desire. Now take these observations and apply them to this hotel and you will soon see that while this hotel might dissapoint you in other cities in Brussels it seems to be quite acceptable as there are few other options that are any better. So, make due with the pillows that are not quite right, the bed which is surprisingly comfortable and the rooms, which are in need of modernization. The gem of the hotel though is its lobby, which is beautifully decorated in dark wood trim and ornate frescoe paneling as the hotel was built at the turn of the century and has some wonderful charms in this particular area. However, one does not sleep in the lobby so look around and enjoy it while you can then take the lift to your floor, close your eyes and have a good sleep but remember to bring your own pillow - next time I will :-)

PS If you are in search of excellent chocolate while in Brussels then head to Mary Chocolatier at 73 rue Royale, it's far better than the others and its products are generally all natural (try the fresh creams). For a great local beer I suggest Karmalite, made in a monestary established in the 17th century, another all natural product that packs a bit of a wallop with 8% alcohol and 100% yummy flavour and this is from a guy who does not drink a lot of beer.

The Metropole Hotel in Brussels is an experience in itself. The reception area, sitting area, bar, and cafe is a sight seeing place just by itself. The staff bends over backward to make sure all your needs are meet (we stayed 8 days). The rooms are spacious and clean (not to mention the free mini-bar and wi fi). The metro and train station is 50 yards from the front door. Grand Plaza and Market are an easy walk as is the "in door mall." I highly recommend the waffles at the cafe in hotel. And compared to other 5 star hotels in the area the price is very reasonable.

I rented a meeting room for a conference, during the lunch break cash was stolen from within the locked room from myself and another member of our party. The incident was reported immediatley to the management who promised to investigate immediatley. They called in the police who took a statement and that is the last I have heard. The only people who had access to the room were myself and the hotel staff with keycard access, yet the hotel refused to accept responsibility and refused to refund my money. The attitude of the hotel was not correct, in my opinion they knew exactly who was working in the catering department on that day and who had access to that room. Over a 24 hour period they did nothing and dismissed my complaints refusing to accept responsibility. I provided my contact details and they promised to send me the crime number from the police and to let me know the details of the investigation - to date I have not heard anything from them. Based on may experince and from other incidents from some of my colleagues it is clear this hotel has a very dishonest staff, and it seems to be an regular occurence that employees steal from guests. This is an excelent hotel however due to the risk of loss I will NEVER stay there again and I will communicate to every person I meet to make sure that they do not expose themselves to thieves in uniform.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

Stayed for 1 night at this hotel and then went to the Radisson Blu Royal for 4 nights. This hotel is old and tired and the rooms need desperately to be refurbished. The lobby is very beautiful, but that is about it. The staff is not very pleasant, and we did not care for the location. Place De Brouckere is a very busy street with a lot of undesirable people hanging around.
