“Good food, service not so good”
Reviewed December 10, 2011

We had a work Christmas dinner here this week. The food was very good, although taking price into account possibly not quite that good. The service was patchy; each diner in our party's course came out at the same time which was good, but they were slow to refill wine and they seemed quite snooty.

“Creative cuisine a la Belge -- atitude highly variable but can be overcome”
Reviewed October 15, 2011

We had heard mixed reviews of this place and even booking a reservation was difficult: we showed up once without one and despite the room being empty we're told 'we're full'; rang to reserve and the person who answered the phone took so much time explaining that they were very busy serving food so I'd have to telephone again later -- it would have been much faster to scribble down the day, time and '3 for dinner'...! On the day we finally dined there were certainly glitches -- a young waiter who couldn't put cutlery in the right places or get the right dishes to the right people, the wine for our main course forgotten until we were nearly done with it -- but there were high points too: a waiter who offered menus in English if needed, many clarifications of ingredients and dishes -- and a surprise free glass each of Belgian Muscat with our puddings as compensation for the delay in serving the main course wine. So, service-wise, a hard nut to crack, but if you stay mellow they may come round -- or you may find the 1 in 3 of their staff who do know how to be accurate and gracious.

The food was *impeccable*: a starter of smoked eel mousse looked like a violet mousse cake, with a micro-thin tuile and polka dots of spicy accompanying sauces, a work of art. Roast chicken was an impressive bird, although the chef's preference for serving it 'rose' wouldn't be mine. Grilled meats and fish dishes are the vast majority of the menu; it probably wouldn't be a vegetarian's choice.

The room is noisy in a modern minimalist way that is the trend these days -- we were lucky to have a table off to a corner, near the museum, so we had a neon-coloured nook behind us,very intriguing, and enough out of the way that we could hear ourselves speak.

For three courses with accompanying wines and water -- and excellent bread! -- we paid on average 70 euros per head. Definitely a worthwhile 'fine dining' experience -- but do persist in booking, and don't let the service attitude spoil it. Go in a good mood with time to enjoy, and it can be a good evening out.
