At the moment of the the secession of the southern provinces (now Blgium) from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830, the Golden Age of the Netherlands were already over. What was left were the remnants of the Golden Age, when the Netherlands was one of the most powerful nations in the world. That shows! The Grand-Place is a great collection of buildings, showing the might, power and wealth of the 16th and 17th century of the then United Kingdom of the Netherlands. This greatness isn't anywhere in the north country, Holland. The way of life of southern provinces (the now called Belgium) was and is much more bourgondic, so the buildings are all glamorous and shining. If you want to see the grandeur of 4 ages ago: visit the Grand-Place!!

the place is awesome, when you walk inside the square, grandeur all around, the architecture and the designs are as real as life itself...sight lovers - this is for you.

We were there the first week of June so it gets dark very late. I had been told by a friend to not miss the light show at Grand-Place. We were in Brussels 4 nights. The first 3 we hung around Grand-Place but did not see a light show. The final night, we had a very late supper at a restaurant right on Grand-Place. At around 11 p.m. the light show finally began and it was nice! Worth the wait!

It is probably the most beautiful and impressive "place" in Europe, there are a lot of restaurants, where you may spend hours just enjoying the surroundings.

Its a very beautiful square, far more serene than most as it is almost free of traffic except when there are weddings at the Town Hall. The cafe scene is relaxing and really reasonably priced. We spent a long time there looking at the fantastic architecture and visiting the nearby restaurants and Museums.
