Owner description: Considered one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Europe, the ornate Grand Place is the center of Brussels, where many historic buildings dating from the 17th century are located.

A truly magnificent square with lovely buildings and a helpful tourist office . A few small restauranta and sandwich shops , all abit expensive, but 10 minutes walk towards Annessenns Place or Gare du Midi there are lots of small inexpensive eating places for immigrants . (Morrocan style sardine fish and roast spring chicken , with spinach, salad ,bread and mint tea for sharing by 3 persons , cost was Euro 23-_ Worth a trip.

One of the sights to see - so much detail on the buildings, now with a lot of gold touches. Often crowded.

With the seemingly ever-growing swathe of EC-occupied buildings resulting in the creeping destruction of old Brussels, there is less and less attractive architecture to justify a visit. The Grand-Place is the exception. It is extremely attractive in any weather, especially when the gold leaf on the buildings picks up some sunlight.

As a result it is of course extremely popular: unavoidable.

Our family of four (parents and kids 18 & 20) visited The Grand Place as our last stop during a four country European vacation. We stayed at the Grand Place Marriott right nearby as we planned to partake in pints of Belgian beer and walk back to the hotel. The Grand Place square was nothing short of breathtaking and easily one of the most beautiful sights we saw in all of our travels. However there was nothing outside that square that would warrant a return visit and we thought most of it was actually quite unpleasant and even unsavory. In The Grand Place we enjoyed a round at "La Paon" (The Peacock) Brasserie. Good people watching but the dinner menu was expensive. We also tried "La Chaloupe d' or" to try the famous Kvak beer. Good people watching there, too. Any cafe outside will have an amazing view of the buildings and I would recommend taking a "progressive dinner" type approach eating or drinking your way around the square to get a fresh perspective. I can't say enough about the beauty of the square itself but just outside of it are cheesy tourist trap shops each selling the same magnets & t- shirts and restaurants you wouldn't eat in if you saw them by the light of day. (We did the following morning: think New Orleans when the party's over). Definitely go see The Grand Square but don't stray too far if you want to have a beautiful memory of your time in Brussels.

If there is only time to see one thing in Brussels - this must be it! In fact, even if you only have a 4 hour stop-over flight, then the quick subway ride (30 minutes.7 euro) will still justify coming into town. If you are staying the night in town, go there VERY early in the morning - maybe 4am or 5am. Seeing this place at this time of day is quite amazing
